Manchester City make signing Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong a priority

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is reportedly towards the top of Manchester City's wish list, as they look to push for Champions League success next season.

The Dutchman has been struggling to find consistency this season and Barcelona could be open to a sale if the right offer arrives, given their uncertain financial position.

According to The Times, Barcelona would be open to making an offer of around 60 million pounds (70 million euros) for De Jong, who was signed by Barcelona back in 2019 from Ajax for a fee of 77.4 million pounds (86 million euros).

De Jong has also been linked with a move to European giants Manchester United and Bayern Munich, but Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has recently made clear that he has the 24-year-old in his plans.

"He is very important," Xavi said. "He has to define an era at this club.

"He's at a very good level and I'm very happy with him. He has to continue. He has to score, assist and he has to be an important player."

Manchester City's transfer targets

Meanwhile, Fernandinho is expected to part ways with Manchester City when his contract expires this summer, with West Ham star Declan Rice also being on the Sky Blues' shortlist as a potential replacement in midfield.

However, Pep Guardiola's No.1 target this summer is no other than Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, who has also attracted interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

It is worth remembering that City have already wrapped up a deal to sign the very promising Argentinian striker Julian Alvarez, who will remain on loan at River Plate until at least July 2022.
