Manchester City announced on Sunday, October 25, that one of their former youth players, Jeremy Wisten, has sadly died. Wisten, who was born in Malawi, was 17 years old and joined City in 2016. In a post on social media, the club also sent their condolences to his family.
"The Manchester City family are saddened to learn of the passing of former Academy player Jeremy Wisten," it read. "We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time." Nothing is known yet about the causes of his death, as his family have not yet made a public statement.
However, reports in England state that Wisten may have gone into depression after being let go by City two years ago. Since the news broke, the expressions of affection have only increased. Among them, some messages from players who played in City's academy with him and who wanted to show their sadness for what happened. Cole Palmer, Liam Delap and Tommy Doyle, among others.
The message from Palmer, a midfielder for City and a former team-mate of Wisten, put a post on Instagram. "You will always be missed," it read, along with a video with photos of both of them. "Fly high, brother. Rest in peace in paradise." "Very sad. Rest in peace, brother," Doyle posted. Some of City's first-team squad also sent their condolences.
Raheem Sterling shared the message of the club with some emojis of praying hands and flowers, while Aymeric Laporte did it through a written response. "Horrible news... Rest in peace young man", declared the French centre-back, a position also held by Wisten.
In addition, a crowdfunding has been set up on GoFoundMe, supposedly by Wisten's girlfriend, with the intention of supporting the family, which in just a few hours has already reached 6000 euros. "We are raising money to help Jeremy's family give him the send-off he deserves," the description of the project reads. "The most beautiful soul who was loved by so many. Everyone who knew Jez knows he had a smile that would brighten up the room. You have left too soon, but you will never be forgotten. Always in our hearts. We love you. Rest in peace, Jez."
