Manchester United receive Luke Shaw injury hint as player joins England camp

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has joined up with England to continue his rehabilitation from a muscle injury.

Shaw sustained a fresh muscle issue in last month's win against Luton Town and it was confirmed he could be ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with the problem.

A brief statement issued by United said: "Luke Shaw has sustained a muscle injury and will be out for an extended period. Further assessment is still needed to determine the severity but we expect him to be absent for a few months."

Shaw has begun rehabilitation on his injury at Carrington and his injury meant he couldn't be selected in the England squad for the international break, but he's been invited to St. George's Park to continue his recovery around the England camp, so he can still be involved regardless.

The defender has been first-choice at left-back for a large part of Gareth Southgate's reign as England manager and he scored the Three Lions' only goal in the Euro 2020 final.

Southgate was recently asked if Shaw's chances of making the England squad for this summer's Euros in Germany are uncertain and he told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Well, we'd have to say yes is the answer to that because the timelines would suggest he will only be available in the dying embers of the season. You don't know what version of the player you're going to get."

Southgate also talked about how tough it is to play in a big tournament like the Euros, and the physicality needed. He said: "Clearly, going into a seven-game tournament... one of the great things we've been able to learn in two of the three tournaments we've played in, we've played all seven matches and the physical demands that that brings are notable.

"We might have everybody that's currently injured back and available but how fit and how match fit and how robust to get through a tournament, we're going to have to work that out as well in the next few months."

If Shaw's rehabilitation goes well, he could return for United before the end of the season and that would increase his chances of starting for England this summer.

The 28-year-old made his England debut in 2014 and he's won 31 senior caps.
