Ferland Mendy has forced the Brazilian out of Madrid's starting eleven. The veteran defender has gone from being one of the club's key players to a squad member.
Marcelo will leave Real Madrid at the end of the current campaign, according to Argentine outlet Olé. The 33-year-old's contract at the Santiago Bernabéu runs until 30 June 2022. He is set to return to Fluminense, the club he left to join Madrid in 2007.
Returning to Brazil
Marcelo has decided to return to Brazil to play regularly to give himself a chance of representing Brazil at the 2022 World Cup. The arrival of French defender Ferland Mendy at left-back has forced the Brazilian out of Madrid's starting eleven.
The veteran defender has gone from being one of the club's key players to a squad member. Last season, he only made 19 appearances and played a total of 1,339 minutes, while in the current campaign he has only played in five games and 140 minutes.
Successful spell with Real Madrid
During his long spell with Los Blancos, the Brazilian has played 533 times, scoring 38 times and providing 101 assists over 15 seasons.
