Marcelo's Real Madrid debut - Who were his teammates and where are they now?

Real Madrid bid adieu to a club legend on Monday as Marcelo Vieira left the club after more than 15 years.

During his time with Los Blancos, Marcelo won 25 trophies - the most by any Real Madrid player in history - which includes six LaLiga titles and five Champions Leagues.

The Brazilian full-back came to the LaLiga giants as an 18-year-old rookie from Fluminense but he is leaving as the club's most decorated footballer of all time.

In the January transfer window of the 2006/07 season, Marcelo signed for Real Madrid and made his debut against Deportivo La Coruna in a LaLiga tie on January 7, 2007.

Iker Casillas - Goalkeeper

The second most-capped Real Madrid player (725) after Raul Gonzalez and former club captain, Iker Casillas left the Spanish giants in 2016 and joined FC Porto. He is one of the greatest and most decorated footballers of all time in Real Madrid's history. 

The World Cup-winning Spanish captain retired from professional football in August 2020 and returned to Real Madrid in December as a deputy to the general director of the Real Madrid Foundation.

Michel Salgado - Right-Back

Salgado joined Real Madrid in 1999 and played for 10 years at the club. He later moved to Blackburn Rovers where he ended his professional career in 2012. 

In 2016, Salgado came out of retirement to play in India's Premier Futsal Tournament. He represented Kerala-based franchise Kochi 5s as their marquee player.

Salgado served as an assistant coach in the Egyptian national team from 2018 to 2019 under head coach Javier Aguirre. In 2019, he joined the Galicia national team as their head coach alongside former Spanish international Francisco Gonzalez.

Ivan Helguera - Centre Back

The Spanish central defender played at Real Madrid for five seasons from 2002 to 2007. He then moved to Valencia for a season and retired from professional football in 2008. He represented the Spanish national team in 48 international matches between 1998 to 2004.

Ivan Helguera is currently the manager of Madrid-based club La Rozas who compete in the fourth tier of Spanish football.

Fabio Cannavaro - Centre-Back

Cannavaro is one of the most decorated centre-backs in world football. He joined Real Madrid from Juventus in 2006 and spent three seasons at the club. Other than Juventus and Real, the defender also played for clubs like Inter Milan, Parma, Napoli and Al-Ahli. He won the Ballon d'Or in 2006.

After retirement, the Italian became a manager and his last stint was with Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande. He is currently on a sabbatical after leaving the club in September 2021.

Sergio Ramos - Left-Back

Sergio Ramos served Real Madrid for 15 years since 2005 and left the club at the end of the 2020/21 season. After Iker Casillas' departure from the club, Ramos became the club captain in 2015. He is the club's fourth most-capped player of all time with 671 appearances under his belt.

After ending his association with the La Liga giants, Ramos moved to PSG in 2021.

Emerson - Central Midfield

The defensive midfielder played for top European clubs like Juventus and AC Milan other than Real Madrid. He played for Los Blancos in the 2006-07 season. With Brazil, he won a Copa America and a Confederations Cup title. In 2016, Emerson retired from professional football after spending a season with MLS side Miami Dade FC.

Guti - Central Midfield

The former Spanish international played at Real Madrid for 15 years (1995-2010). In his final year as a professional footballer, he joined Turkish side Besiktas. He retired in 2011.

In 2013, he returned to Real Madrid as the coach of the club's Juvenil side for two seasons. In 2018, he joined Besiktas as their assistant coach. The next season he was appointed as the manager of Segunda Division club Almeria where he worked for one season. He left the club in 2020.

Fernando Gago - Central Midfield

Gago played for Real Madrid from 2007 to 2012 and later moved to Valencia. The defensive midfielder retired from professional football in 2020. After retirement, he joined Argentine top division club Aldosivi as their head coach in January 2021 a job he left in September 2021. Since October 2021, he has been managing another Argentine club Racing Club.

Raul Gonzalez - Left Wing

The legendary Spanish striker is the most-capped Real Madrid player (741) of all time. After spending 16 seasons at the club since 1995, he left in 2010. Thereafter he joined Schalke and then ended his career in the MLS playing for New York Cosmos.

Upon retirement, Raul returned to Real Madrid in 2018 as the head coach of the club's U15. A year later he became the coach of Real Madrid Castilla.

Jose Antonio Reyes - Right Wing

The late Spanish midfielder played at Arsenal for three seasons from 2004 to 2007. In between, he had spent one season (2006/07) at Real Madrid on loan. Other than the Premier League giants and Real Madrid, he also played for Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.

In January 2019, he returned to Spain, after spending four months in China playing for Xinjiang Tianshan Leopard F.C, and joined Diego Capel at Extremadura UD. In June 2019, Reyes died in a car accident.

Ruud van Nistelrooy - Forward

The legendary Dutch forward joined Real Madrid in 2006 from Manchester United and played for four seasons. In the final two seasons of his professional career, Ruud van Nistelrooy played at Hamburg and Malaga respectively before hanging up his boots in 2012.

Nistelrooy was the assistant coach of the Netherlands national team between 2014 to 2016. He then joined the PSV U19 side as their head coach in 2018 but then returned to the national team as an assistant coach in 2019. He was seen on the Dutch bench at the Euro 2020 as Frank de Boer's assistant.

David Beckham - Substitute

One of the greatest English footballers of all time, David Beckham joined Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2003 and played there for four seasons. In 2007, he moved to MLS side La Galaxy where he spent the next five seasons of his career. In between, he had two short loan spells at AC Milan in 2009 and 2010. He finally ended his career in 2013 after spending six months at PSG.

Beckham is currently the owner of MLS franchise Inter Miami. The club made its debut in 2021.

Ronaldo - Substitute

One of the greatest strikers to have graced the game, Ronaldo played for Real Madrid for five seasons, joining them in 2002. He has also played for European giants like Inter Milan, FC Barcelona and AC Milan. He retired from professional football in 2011. With Brazil, he won two World Cups (1994 and 2002).

In 2018, the legendary striker became the majority owner of Spanish second division side Real Valladolid in September 2018, after buying 51 per cent of the club’s shares for a total amount of €30m.

Marcelo - Substitute

The Brazilian full-back joined Real Madrid in 2007 and has been playing at the club for the past 14 seasons. He won all major trophies at the club multiple times and ahead of the 2021-22 season, he was named as the club captain after Sergio Ramos left the side for PSG. On June 13, 2022, Marcelo officially announced his departure from the club after his contract expired.
