Manchester United reached the Champions League quarter-finals courtesy of a controversial late penalty against PSG.
Referee Damir Skomina spent what seemed an eternity to watch VAR footage of Presnel Kimpembe's block before pointing to the spot.
Marcus Rashford stepped up and kept his composure to slot home and ensure United progressed on away goals (3-3 agg).
The decision came after Diogo Dalot roamed forward and blasted a shot on goal.
Kimpembe jumped in the way, turning his back in the process and the ball deflected off his arm for a corner.
There were hardly any appeals for handball but Dalot himself pleaded with the referee to consider his case.
Skomina was then directed by the team in his ear to review footage of the incident and gave the all-important penalty.
In the BT Sport studio, there was a consensus that the referee had made the incorrect decision.
Rio Ferdinand said: 'I don’t care what any referee tells me, that just isn’t handball. He’s facing the other way.
'It’s unnatural to stand like this (arms down by his side), I don’t think it’s handball. I love it that it is handball but I don’t get it. The law is wrong.
‘Say you’re running at me and I’m stood four yards away. If I have to keep my arms down by side you’ve got an advantage. It’s unfair.’
Michael Owen chimed in concurrence: 'I know there’ll be people who will say it’s a penalty but for me it’s not one in a million years.
'He’s turned his back, his arm is not in an unnatural position. It’s just flicked off his arm and gone for a corner. As soon as it went to VAR you knew it was going to be a penalty.
'What we’re finding with VAR is every ex-footballer thinks something is not a penalty but every referee thinks it is. There’s a huge disconnect and that is the worrying thing.'

They are footballers and they know how to kick the ball. And there other side we have referees who are trained to guide this games. I don't know if you heard about the new rules. The new rules agree with the decision the referee took, it is a penalty. You might argue if you want but that won't change the results now. I like the fact they saw "me personally I don't think that's a penalty" well the rules are not bieng amended by the way you think big guy. VAR backed the referee. And Man United becomes the first team to come like this in this history of UCL followed by Barca against one team." There is a saying which says you can have all the money you want but money won't buy you happiness"

kimpembe, should have been given a red card in first leg, but didn't happen but the referee saw pogba's fauls and sent him off, and again that ball hit his elbow and you want him to be unpunished?Man u deserves the penalty.

A spade is a spade. Definitely a handball from a VAR point of view and the referee is 100% correct. Arm chair critics trying to rub salt to PSG!

complete nonsense...when you get the ball in the box just kick the ball at the opposing players arm or hand or whatever...under this new ideology..why attempt at goal..easier to hit an opponents arm..rediculous

I don't see why such a big fuss about this penalty.. Remember same controversial penalty was given to Real Madrid against Juv.. And that was a different stage to this, a 'Semi final' for god's sake. And they just got dumped out.. So enough with the debate.

A couple of points to clarify. First, therule for a hand ball includes using any part of the body from the tips of the fingers to the shoulder. Second, the proper way to look at this soccer ruleis that a player cannot "handle" the ball. A ball that is kicked and hits a player's hand or arm is not a hand ball.According to FIFA's Laws of the Game, there is absolutely nothing illegal about the ballcoming into contact with a player's arm or hand. It's only when the player deliberately creates that contact (or uses unintentional contact in a deliberate manner) in an attempt to control or manipulate the movement of the ball.

mind your business... and let the referee do theirs... they are trained for that... if there was a rule stating that when you turn your back, your arm is no more a part of your body it would have been written somewhere... and if you don't want to enjoy as former United plauers, go and be supporting psg in the farmers league

We can see clear view of net behind ball and ball is on the way directly to left corner of goal defender put his body arms open to defend the shot . Possibly it can be direct goal too if his arm never deflected ball. Lot of time referee gave penalties even ball hit arm while crossing or sometimes defender tackle ball in different area of D

That’s a penalty in my opinion , where the psg player had his back against the ball or not , he stopped the ball going towards goal with. His hand . Actually u see his hand move slightly towards the ball

if that wasn't penalty then any handball inside the box either intentionally or unintentionally would be no PENALTY!!...Michael Owen u must be dreaming with ur eyes open. Pure bullocks of a comment from Owen. #fullydeservedwin
