Mikel Arteta tries to motivate players with a LIGHT BULB - before Arsenal go on to lose to Brighton

Mikel Arteta's outlandish team talk involving a light bulb has been revealed by the All or Nothing: Arsenal show.

The last two episodes of the highly anticipated fly-on-the-wall Amazon documentary are released on Tuesday.

And fans will be keen to see Gunners manager Arteta's bizarre motivational techniques, as he urged his players in a pre-game speech to create 'energy' and 'electricity' as he held a lit light bulb up to them.

Arsenal went on to lose that match, in early April, 2-1 against Brighton, the second in a run of three successive losses which would eventually cost them Champions League football at the expense of bitter rivals Tottenham.

He said: '(Thomas) Edison invented the light bulb. Today I want to see a team that is connected because a bulb by itself is nothing. I want to see a team that is connected with each other and that shines.

'And you want to transmit to him (your team-mate) light and energy and passion and how you play football, and you two the same. And each of us plays the game connected, because what happens when we play connected, guys?

'What is the next thing that happens? That we connect with 60,000 people (the fans) who create more energy.

'Because at the end is electricity, that through heat creates light and life. Because if not it would be f***ing dark if this guy doesn't have the idea to do that.

'And I want you to play like this today, because as good as we are it depends on one thing.

'What makes us special is our attitude, and today I want you to play with that attitude. Go out there, f***ing turn the light on, and play football. Let's go!'

Before the team talk, Arteta called his players to stand in a close huddle, but defender Cedric Soares is seen looking confused after just the first line.

As the Spaniard continues, a coach plugs in the bulb so it is illuminated, with the former Manchester City assistant using passionate hand gestures and waving the bulb around to emphasise his points.

The camera then pans to attacking midfielder Emile Smith Rowe, who is listening in respectful silence but also looks a little nonplussed by the analogy.

A clearly pumped-up Arteta then finishes with a flourish, embracing goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale as the players roar and clap with anticipation.

However, the Seagulls - who had not scored in their previous three matches - went in at half-time 1-0 via Leandro Trossard's goal. After the break, Enock Mwepu doubled the lead and they held on despite Martin Odegaard's deflected late strike.

Previous episodes have shown Arteta's odd team talks, seen by some as 'weird' but unquestionably innovative, and providing one of the most fascinating strands in the docuseries.

Arteta had previously asked his players to create a bubble of energy by holding hands and frequently shared his own insecurities and fears in an attempt to help them relax.

In the second batch of three episodes Arteta cast aside the clever stuff and went straight for the gut – the pride of his players, in some old-fashioned motivation.

In amongst the psychology, props, flipcharts and tactical prompts Arteta employs pre-match, is an approach that every park player would instantly recognise. Rendered to its simplest form, it translates as, 'they think you're s**t'.

The boss tried to fire up his players by insisting Man City tried to 'humiliate' them, Wolves would 'insult' them and that Brentford players thought they were a soft touch.

Maybe there are more 'light bulb moments' to come for Arteta as he tries to motivate his stars.

Arsenal have begun their 2022-23 season with two wins, beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park in the Premier League curtain-raiser before dispatching Leicester 4-2 at the Emirates to leave them second in the table after two matches.
