Millwall boss Gary Rowett 'considered for vacant West Brom job' after Steve Bruce sacking

Millwall boss Gary Rowett is being lined up to succeed Steve Bruce as West Brom boss, according to reports.

Last week, the Baggies parted ways with Bruce following one win from their first 13 games which has left them in 22nd place and in the Championship relegation zone.

And with Rowett having an impressive resume in the second tier of English football, it's understood that Albion see him as the ideal man to step into the dugout.

According to the Sun, Millwall are yet to receive a formal approach from West Brom over Rowett but the Baggies remain keen on securing his services.

They see him as an ideal candidate due to his history working with tight budgets and being able to produce consistent results - which he's shown during stints at Birmingham, Derby and Stoke City.

The Millwall boss is said to be interested in a move and would favour a return to the midlands, having been in London - away from his family - for over three years.

The 48-year-old has been in charge of the Lions for just over three seasons now and has guided them to a top-half Championship finish in each of those campaigns.

Albion brought an end to Bruce's disastrous eight-month spell after last Saturday's 0-0 draw with Luton - which left the team 22nd in the Championship, their lowest league position in more than 20 years.

Sportsmail understands relations became very strained between Bruce and the club's hierarchy after transfer deadline day when proposed loan deals for Steven Alzate and Josh Onomah both collapsed, leaving the manager furious.

The club had also been linked with former Huddersfield boss Carlos Corberan but now Rowett is at the top of the Baggies' shortlist. Chris Wilder and Rob Edwards are amongst other candidates.

Albion chief executive Ron Gourlay had been reluctant to sack Bruce - after identifying him as Valerien Ismael's replacement earlier this year - but was left with little choice after Bruce was barracked by fans last weekend.

After the draw with Luton, Bruce said: 'I've been in this a long, long time. If you've been doing it for 1,000 games you'd like to think you know what you're doing.

'Whatever happens above me is for other people to decide, I will carry on until I know different - I'm determined to turn the club around.' He was dismissed shortly after that draw.
