Having led Croatia to the World Cup final this past summer, Luka Modric was named as the tournament's best player and he has been sharing the trophy around with his close friends just a week away from FIFA's The Best ceremony.
The Croatian was already chosen as UEFA's best player for the 2017/18 season and now is hoping to be crowned The Best ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah.
There is a great desire for him to win in the Real Madrid dressing room, with teammates publicly declaring their support and his friends and family are also getting behind him, after a close friend posted a picture alongside the player and the Golden Ball he won in Russia.
This is Modric's year.
After becoming a European champion again with Madrid and finishing second in Russia he is the favourite to take the FIFA award.

modric is by far the most overrated player on earth today reason Won an undeserved golden ball played a shambolic Argentina team who on their day would have trashed them played mideocre puny teams and could only beat them via penalties showed he was nothing when he came up against top teams like France and Spain. you know what happened right As a midfielder he didn't even have the most assist, key passes, tackles across europe. why is this guy even shortlisted I FIFA the best award with CR7, pure disrespect

Modric should win any individual prize Messi can't – Rakitic: Barcelona and Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic has said any individual prize Lionel Messi cannot win this season should go to his Luka Modric. Luka Modric who won World Cup Golden Ball after...

Modric has had a very overrated year looking back. Won an undeserved Golden Ball at the World Cup (wasn't even the undisputed best Croatian player), has had a horrible start to the season and finished a distant second in the league.

It was gonna be either Modric or Hazard. Personally, I found Hazard the better of the 2 (Hazard really excelled in every game, whereas Modric was good in all games, but not really excelled in each of them). However, given that he reached the final, it makes sense. And usually, thats how the FIFA works as well, to give it as a consolidation prize of sorts to the losing finalist. Either way, both Modric and Hazard deserved the title, I can live with it. What Griezmann is doing up there as a 3rd is a mystery though.

Modric has been our second best player for season now. The whole world was a witness to how great he was and easily the best midfielder in the world. It's unfortunate that Croatia lost because they played their hearts out. Guess Lukita can go rest easy with his 4 CL, multiple TOTY medals and World Cup POTT. You can't change which country you were born in but as long as you give it your all then it doesn't matter. Lukita tried and went all out even on an empty tank. Well done.

I literally cried when the camera caught the distant look in Modric’s eyes. As a Madridistas, I’m happy for Varane, so young yet highly decorated but for Modric, that was his last chance to make history. He was so close he could almost feel it but could never touch it. From a kid playing football in the minefield growing up to be one of the greatest footballers to ever grace the game and even greater person, he was so close to his dream not just his but his people’s too. In my heart, he’d won this WC even tho he never lifted the trophy. And maybe, just maybe, one day he will lead another Croatian golden generation to the top of the world as a manager. Saddest summer since ‘98.

I am a barca fan, Congrats to Modric and Croatia, this WC has brought Real and Barca to support one team - can't remember the last time that happened. Modric deserves it, Croatia lost but won the hearts of everyone here and elsewhere. Truly an underdog story that will never be forgotten. Led by Modric who in my opinion is the best midfielder in the world and a squad who's legs never grew tired and undying will to win regardless the situation. On the contrary, I hope you're season is cough not good and don't sign any good players. On the contrary of that as a football fan - all the best!

Easily the most important midfielder of this generation especially for our club. He proved why he deserves the acclaim during this tournament.

Well deserved! He had an amazing tournament! Would've liked to see Varane in the top 3 instead of Griezmann but I'm happy that Modric won it!

I've said this over and over again: Modric has been the best midfielder since 2013. If he is healthy he very rarely loses the midfield battle and gets outplayed. Like it almost never happens. He's gone against Iniesta, Xavi, Vidal, Koke, Thiago, Marchisio, Lahm, Pogba, David Silva, De Bruyne etc and he and Kroos outplayed them. Insane player.

Dude will always be underrated due nationality and not-so-flashy playstyle. I still remember during WC times how no one at work believed me when i said Modric was the best midfielder in the world, no one even knew him (ok, they were mostly girls), and he was at his prime at 2014, even better than now.
