Newcastle took Fabian Schar's concussion history into account before deciding to leave him out of yesterday's 2-0 defeat at Manchester City.
Medics decided to take no chances with the Swiss defender after a collision with Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez in last weekend's Carabao Cup final defeat even though he completed the game at Wembley.
Schar was involved in a serious concussion incident playing for his country in 2019 when he was knocked unconscious.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe explained his absence at the Etihad.
'He took a nasty knock to his eye and cut and bruise around that area (at Wembley). He did some tests with the doctor and we knew quite early in the week he wouldn't be available today.
'The doctor has been with us a long period of time and knows Fabian's history. That's all taken into account with the concussion protocol that we will follow to the letter.'
Schar was knocked out for a few seconds during a match after a clash of heads against Georgia in 2019 but remarkably continued to play on after five minutes of treatment.
