OFFICIAL: LFP abolishes the Coupe de la Ligue (league cup) with immediate effect

After the meeting on September 18, The Board of Directors and then the General Assembly of the LFP decided to abolish the Coupe de la Ligue (French league cup) at the end of 2019-2020 season.

Depending on market conditions, the LFP reserves the right to relaunch this competition at a later date.

This decision will give players more recovery time and offer an additional place in the UEL via the Ligue 1 classification at the end of the 2020-2021 season.

It's reported that the fail to find a new broadcasting partner beyond this season and no more qualification into the UEL from 2021 lead the LFP to make the decision.

The Coupe de la Ligue, known as the French League Cup, is a knockout cup competition in French football organized by the LFP. The tournament was established in 1993.

Unlike the Coupe de France, is only open to professional clubs in France which play in country's top three football divisions.

Strasbourg are the current champions, having defeated Guingamp 4–1 on penalties following a 0–0 draw for a fourth title in the 2018–19 competition.

PSG are the most winning team with 8 titles.
