OFFICIAL: Roma sack coach Di Francesco who eliminated Barca last year

Roma have sacked their head coach Eusebio Di Francesco with immediate effect, following the club's exit from the UEFA Champions League last night.

Last night the tactician refused to speak to the media, incurring a fine from UEFA, following the extra time Champions League exit to FC Porto.

It was his second devastating result in only a few days, after the 3-0 Derby della Capitale loss to Lazio on Saturday.

There was a crisis meeting this afternoon at the Trigoria training ground between directors Monchi, Mauro Baldissoni and Guido Fienga.

The decision was announced at 17.00 GMT.

Former Sassuolo Coach Di Francesco had taken the job in the summer of 2017 and took Roma to their first Champions League semi-final in decades last season eliminating Valverde's Barcelona, as well as a top three finish in Serie A.

He is dismissed following 87 competitive games, having won 46, drawn 18 and lost 23.

It’s widely reported Ranieri has been chosen to take over as a caretaker manager until the end of the season.

This would be a return to the Stadio Olimpico for the 67-year-old, a self-confessed Giallorossi supporter, as he already sat on their bench from September 2009 to February 2011.

His career has taken a downward turn since winning the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016, as he was fired in February 2017.

Ranieri then had a spell at FC Nantes before taking over at Fulham in November 2018, only to be sacked on February 28.
