OFFICIAL: UEFA ban Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana for twelve months
The disciplinary body of the European football association, UEFA, has imposed a suspension of 12 months on Andre Onana for a doping violation. After an "out of competition" check on October 30 last year, the goalkeeper found the substance Furosemide in his urine. The suspension is effective from today and applies to all football activities, both national and international.
Ajax statement:
On the morning of October 30, Onana was feeling unwell. He wanted to take a pill to ease the discomfort. Unknowingly, however, he took Lasimac, a drug that his wife had previously been prescribed. Onana’s confusion resulted in him mistakenly taking his wife's medicine, ultimately causing this measure to be taken by UEFA against the goalkeeper. Furthermore, the disciplinary body of the football association has stated that Onana had no intention of cheating. However, the European Football Association believes, on the basis of the applicable anti-doping rules, that an athlete has a duty at all times to ensure that no banned substances enter the body.
Onana and Ajax will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Managing director Edwin van der Sar: “We explicitly renounce performance-enhancing drugs, we obviously stand for a clean sport. This is a terrible setback, for Andre himself but certainly also for us as a club. Andre is a top goalkeeper, who has proven his worth for Ajax for years and is very popular with the fans. We had hoped for a conditional suspension or for a suspension much shorter than these twelve months, because it was arguably not intended to strengthen his body and thus improve his performance. ”

In terms if goal-keeping abilities Onana is good and no one doubts him in that area. But for this specific case, him and whoever advised him are wrong and should be grateful Ajax are still willing to work with him otherwise he has almost costed his whole career. That lazy excuse of his just makes him sound even more dumber than a 10yr old. Self prescription and sharing of medicine is never a good idea and for an adult and very rich professional footballer like him who can afford proper healthcare its a no brainer. Infact the disciplinary board was even lenient on him. Furosemide and Paracetamol are not the same things, the drug is a serious "Prescription Only" and not an over the counter drug like you are buying sweets or something. So that excuse is just too lazy and cheap. That drug is used in the treatment of hypertension cases and other chronic Renal conditions! Next time you will hear he swallowed Magnessium Triscillicate tablets cause he thought they were Mint Sweets! jokers will never end, hope his career isn't dead already!

Why is everyone trying to play the race card here?... I vividly remember Diego Maradona and Adrian Mutu getting banned severely for failing drug tests and notable whites from other sports have been banned over time. Face the player people, footballers are educated and reminded of their responsibilities at the beginning of every season, so he can't claim ignorance... Diuretics are banned because they're masking substances, which means, if u take performance enhancing drugs and u don't want to be caught, u can take diuretics and it will mask its metabolites, making it impossible or difficult to be caught... it's either he's hiding something or we should really believe he was ill and then used his wife's prescribed medication, medicines he doesn't know what they're for, C'mon, who does that? Even poor people who can't afford medicine don't swallow pills they don't know... No matter how black my skin is, defending something like this is beyond me and not owning up when you've messed up will never be my lot... If he's truly guilty, then he should accept his punishment! I'm not gonna assume anything except say that everyone could get different bans (could also depend on the drugs). Stan Lazaridis was banned for 12 months like Onana, and he's white. Alban Dragusha was banned for 24 MONTHS and he's white. Maradona with an 15 Month ban. RUSSIA with a whole 4 year ban. Compare that to Edgar Davids, who is black, who got a 4 month suspension. (I will note that there is such thing as appealing). So now tell me why do you guys think that?

Stop making everything about race. Mutu was white, hopefully CAS reduces the ban.
