Football has changed massively in recent years, with more and more world-class players running down their contracts and moving to new clubs for free.

This was perfectly exemplified in the summer of 2021 when we saw a host of top players move for nothing, including Lionel Messi, Gini Wijnaldum and Gigi Donnarumma to PSG, Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay to Barcelona, and David Alaba to Real Madrid.

Many more world-class footballers will surely follow on a free transfer in the summers of 2022, 2023 and beyond.

This provides a conundrum for numerous clubs around Europe, as they know that their players’ values will rapidly decrease the closer their contracts get to the expiry date.

For this reason, many clubs decide to sell players if they show no signs of wanting to renew their contract up to two years before expiry.
