Arsenal trained amid the Singapore sunshine on Tuesday as Unai Emery's side stepped up their pre-season preparations ahead of the Atletico Madrid friendly.

Emery's players were put through their paces by their new coach during a series of rigorous drills at the Singapore American School campus.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang later got into an ice bath alongside fellow striker Alexandre Lacazette as the forwards cooled down from the session.

Stars were seen joking around in the training session with Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Lacazette spotted celebrating wildly.

Emery was at the forefront of the action, barking orders to his players as he laid down the law ahead of Thursday's game against Atletico.

A number of fringe players are bidding to make their impression under Emery this summer having been frozen out by former manager Arsene Wenger.

Lucas Perez, who spent last season on loan at former club Deportivo La Coruna, is one of those players and was seen putting in the hard graft with a weights session.

The new-look Arsenal appear to be forging a strong bond with a number of players embracing each other in a show of team unity under Emery.

The Gunners will take on Diego Simeone's Atletico side at the Singapore National Stadium having met the Spaniards just two months ago in the Europa League.

Arsenal were eliminated by the eventual winners on that occasion but will be hoping for revenge in Asia as they bid to begin their Singapore tour on a high.

Emery will face his former employers Paris Saint-Germain at the same ground before Arsenal face a match against Chelsea in Dublin and finally Lazio in Stockholm.

Arsenal are without a number of their World Cup stars with the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Nacho Monreal on holiday following their exploits at Russia 2018.

However Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil has returned early from his break and has linked up with the squad in Singapore, though is not expected to play on Thursday.

The 29-year-old announced his retirement from international duty on Sunday after accusing the German Football Association of using him as a political scapegoat due to his Turkish heritage.

Ozil had divided opinion throughout his Germany career despite winning his country's Player of the Year award in five of the past seven seasons.

But criticism of Ozil reached boiling point when he and Ilkay Gundogan of Manchester City posed for a photograph with Tayyip Erdogan, the controversial President of Turkey ahead of Germany's disappointing World Cup campaign.

Ozil's team-mate Hector Bellerin, who is also on tour in Singapore, took to Twitter to praise the midfielder for making the decision to step down.

'Surreal that someone who has done so much for his country on and off the pitch has been treated with such disrespect,' he wrote on Twitter. 'Well done Ozil for standing up to this behaviour!'
