Diego Costa is a Spanish footballer who plays as a striker for Atlético Madrid and the Spain national team. Noted for his fiery temperament, Costa has been criticized and punished for several confrontations with opponents.

Born and raised in Brazil, Costa began his senior club career playing for Braga. However, he featured sparingly for his parent club, and instead, embarked on several loan periods, notably gaining traction as a ferocious goalscorer with Celta Vigo and Albacete, which garnered him a move to fellow La Liga club Real Valladolid in 2009. He immediately became the team's talisman, finishing as their top goalscorer, and returned to Atlético Madrid a season later, prior to embarking on another loan, this time, departing to Rayo Vallecano. After also finishing as the club's highest goalscorer, Costa returned to his parent club with an increased role in 2011.

In his return to Atlético, Costa blossomed as a goalscorer and helped the club win a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey title, and a UEFA Super Cup. However, his homecoming was again short-lived, and in 2014, Costa transferred to Premier League club Chelsea in a deal worth €35 million. In London, Costa won three trophies, including two Premier League titles, and a League Cup. In 2018, amidst reports of a rift with the head coach Antonio Conte, Costa returned to Atlético Madrid in a club record transfer worth an initial €56 million, where he won a UEFA Europa League title and another UEFA Super Cup.

A dual-citizen of Brazil and Spain, Costa initially featured in friendly matches for Brazil in 2013, before declaring his desire to represent Spain, having been granted Spanish citizenship that year. He made his senior debut for Spain in 2014 at age 26, and has since had 24 caps, and scored 10 goals, and has represented them at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.
