Sergio Ramos has certainly come up big for Real Madrid in the past, most notably in the 93rd minute of the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid in 2014, and he showed that same spirit against Girona on Thursday night as he scored two key goals in the 4-2 Copa del Rey victory.
With the score at 1-1, Ramos scored a Panenka-style penalty, sending it straight down the middle; after Girona had made it 2-2, Ramos once again eased Madrid's minds by powerfully heading past Gorka Iraizoz to put Los Blancos in the lead.
The centre-back has always been a defender with the soul of a striker and on nights like last night, Madrid are thankful to have another option in attack.
In fact, after his brace against Girona, Ramos is now the third top scorer at Madrid this season on nine goals, one behind Gareth Bale in second and four behind Karim Benzema's 13; he is an emergency No. 9 and an excellent captain.
Aside from scoring important goals, Ramos was in charge of lifting Madrid in delicate moments, as shown by the personality he exemplified with his Panenka penalty, while he supported Marcos Llorente after the midfielder gave away a penalty, as well as ensuring that Los Blancos did not lose concentration in the final period of the match.
"The team has shown personality and played a great match," Ramos said after the Girona victory.
"The tie is more than open because we would like to have not conceded, but we are happy with the game."
Ramos has scored 102 goals in his entire career and every year, he makes sure that his best form arrives at the decisive moment for Madrid; the 32-year-old began the season poorly but he has taken control of the dressing room, alongside Santiago Solari, in the quest of fighting for titles - the Champions League, where they will face Ajax in the last 16, and the Copa del Rey.
The meeting where Madrid had clear-the-air talks after the loss to Real Sociedad appears to have benefitted the squad, as shown by recent results and performances.
