Real Madrid 4-0 Celta: Vini helps Madrid 7 pts lead, 2 own goals from visitors

Real Madrid have responded to victories for Barcelona and Girona earlier this weekend by defeating Celta Vigo 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu, ending a run of two matches without a victory.

Vinicius was enough on his own however, at least to get Real Madrid romp to victory underway. He scored his 10the league goal of the season although he also picked up a yellow card for a push on Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza who pulled his shirt in the second half.

Real Madrid took the lead when Vinicius turned in a rebound from close range. It was Antonio Rudiger who headed Luka Modric’s corner goalwards on 20 minutes. Vicente Guaita saved his effort and then Vinicius’ first as the ball came back out to him, but he could not stop the follow-up.

Vinicius was a constant threat for Real Madrid and when former Barcelona full-back Mingueza cynically pulled his shirt to stop him getting away the Brazilian reacted. The shirt had stretched almost to the point of tearing and when Vinicius got back to his feet he pushed the Celta Vigo man to the ground.

It was the second game running Vinicius had pushed an opponent for fouling him. His neck-high push on Willi Orban almost earned him a second yellow but he got away with just a booking for a previous push. This time there was also a yellow for the Real Madrid forward.

With 10 minutes left Madrid doubled their lead and again it was a Modric corner and a Rudiger header that shifted the scoreline. Modric will never lose his ability to put pinpoint corners on the heads of his team-mates. It was Modric that famously found Sergio Ramos in the 93rd minute of the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.

He has been doing it ever since and it was just another day at the office for the midfielder as his second corner was powered on to the cross bar by Rudiger. The ball came back out and hit Guaita in the back before going over the line.

When Modric was taken off on 82 minutes the whole of the Bernabeu was on its feet, including the watching Bellingham. They chanted the Croatian’s name as he went off.

The third was made by Vinicius. His dangerous cross curled in towards the Celta Vigo six-yard box and was inadvertently turned over the line by Celta defender Carlos Dominguez.

There was still time for a fourth. Arda Guler came on as a late substitute and the 19-year-old Turkish international rounded the keeper and scored from a Dani Ceballos pass.
