Referee Paul Tierney made a similar mistake in favour of Nottingham Forest before Darwin Nunez's controversial winner on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp's men snatched all three points deep into injury-time thanks to a 99th minute header by the Uruguayan striker.
However, controversy struck as play had stopped for a head injury to Ibrahima Konate over a minute earlier, as Callum Hudson-Odoi shaped to cross from a dangerous position. Konate recovered quickly and Tierney ruled that Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher should restart play.
Yet instead of returning possession, Kelleher picked out a team-mate and Liverpool went on the attack before eventually finding the winning goal.
Tierney made a similar mistake early in the second half when Ryan Yates was struck in the face by the ball after Harvey Elliott attempted a shot.
Instead of giving the ball to Liverpool, it was Forest who were allowed to regain possession from a drop ball back to the goalkeeper.
Liverpool fans were quick to point it out on social media, with one saying: 'The game wasn’t televised in the uk, so here’s a bigger question: if this is such a massive talking point, why did MOTD not also show the exact same thing happen to Liverpool possession earlier in the game when Forest got a drop ball to their keeper.'
A second wrote: 'Are they going to talk about the occasion he did the same thing incorrectly earlier in the game against Liverpool? Forest didn’t complain when it happened, there were 3 minutes that passed.'
A third fan added: 'Referee done exactly same thing to Liverpool in the first half lads'.
Tierney's controversial decision resulted in Forest coach Steven Reid to be shown a red card after heated scenes on the benches, while unused substitute Felipe was booked.
Forest's owner Evangelos Marinakis was also seen confortning Tierney shortly after the full-time whistle.
Meanwhile, Mark Clattenburg will plead Forest's case to his one-time employers after the former referee was left stunned by Tierney's display.

Finally, some balance. Extremely one sided version of events on this app. Usually to the detriment of Liverpool. 10 stories about 'robbery' and only 1 story with a factual view. Funny that!

did they use hand to throw ball inside the ney, was it offside, was it a penalty? you people will just open mouth to say rubbish, because the ref dropped the ball to the keeper out of play instead to the opponent means they've cheated, what if they didn't score, how many teams would have even scored like that!!!
