Rooney posts throwback pic of Manchester United club legends

The day after a chastening loss in Europe, Manchester United fans would be forgiven for feeling nostalgic about the days they were dominant domestically and a leading force in Europe.

That feeling was exacerbated by Wayne Rooney, with the former United star posting a throwback picture from his Red Devils days.

The snap shows Rooney in quality company, with team mates Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand.

All United legends, all have since moved on from Old Trafford - Rooney the last to do so, returning to boyhood club Everton in 2017 before moving on to DC United in MLS.

United fans on Twitter were quick to reminisce, one commenting they 'don't make them like they used to', another remembering the 'unbelievable quality' of bygone days.

What is ironic, therefore, is that the picture actually comes from a bleak day in the careers of Rooney, Ronaldo and co - hence why they look rather glum as they stand in the rain.

It was taken at the 2005 FA Cup final at the Millenium Stadium, where United lost on penalties to Arsenal after a goalless 120 minutes.

The game is regarded as one of the poorest finals of recent years, despite the quality on show from both the United side and their opponents.

Things are not a lot better of late for United either, after they were beaten 2-1 by Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The result meant United missed out on the chance of topping their group, and means they could face a harder tie in the last 16 when the draw is made on Monday.
