Scholes: Man Utd's loss to Sevilla will show Ten Hag he 'needs better players'

Paul Scholes felt the first '20 minutes' of Manchester United's 3-0 loss to Sevilla would have shown Erik ten Hag he needs better squad players.

With the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Bruno Fernandes unavailable, United could not find a way into the game in Seville.

It came after they threw away a 2-0 lead in the first leg to draw 2-2 after two late own goals from Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia.

After labelling his former side's performance across the two legs 'disgraceful', Scholes added: 'This has helped [ten Hag]. He knows just by looking at that game tonight, probably that first 20 minutes, that he needs better players to fill his squad.'

For Owen Hargeaves, Anthony Martial's tepid performance was indicative of United's failure to fill a long-standing hole.

'The summer Manchester United desperately need a number nine and I'm sure theyre going to address that,' he said.

'Depth is obviously a big thing. I think Erik ten Hag has done a great job, but today is a sore one because it could have been so different. In the first leg they gave it away.'

Thursday's loss will be a big blow for Untied fans, but they still have an excellent chance to finish the season with Champions League football and two trophies.

Having already secured the League cup earlier this year, they face Brighton in their FA Cup semi final on Sunday.
