Sky Sports have apologised for 'insensitive and regrettable' comments during Everton's loss at Aston Villa on Sunday in which commentators mocked black armbands worn by the team.
Everton were paying tribute to Michael Jones, the 26-year-old fan who died working at the site of their new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock last week.
Sky Sports commentators Bill Leslie and Andy Hinchliffe sparked outrage after they joked boss Sean Dyche looked 'like a croupier' - a casino operator - in his white shirt and black armband.
Sky Sports have apologised for 'any upset or distress' caused by the comments, and stated they have reminded the commentators of their 'responsibilities and the need for care and sensitivity'.
'Comments made during the Aston Villa v Everton game were insensitive and regrettable,' a spokesperson said.
'We have spoken to everyone involved in the coverage including both the commentators and have reminded them of their responsibilities and the need for care and sensitivity. We apologise for any upset or distress caused by these comments.'
Mail Sport understands Leslie and Hinchcliffe have expressed regret at their comments.
Fans in the stands brought banners commemorating the life of Jones, and his support of the club, displaying them before the 4-0 home defeat alongside the club's tribute.
Both Everton and crosstown rivals Liverpool visited the site of the new stadium to lay wreaths in tribute to the construction worker, with Jurgen Klopp also leading his players in a minute's silence after placing the flowers.
Jones suffered 'severe head injuries' whilst working on the site on August 14 at midday, and although he was quickly rushed to hospital, he died later that day despite medics' best efforts.
In the wake of the tragedy, contractors Laing O'Rourk suspended work on the project until further notice, sharing a statement that expressed their 'shock and sadness' at Jones' passing, and vowed to see the organisation 'cooperate fully with any investigation that follows'.
Everton also released a statement following the incident, saying that everyone at the club was 'heartbroken' by Jones' tragic death.
Black armbands were also worn by Everton's Under-21 side in their match against Liverpool on August 14, and during Sunday's tie, supporters at Villa Park held a minute's applause in the 26th minute of the match.

Too much pretence on racism even when we dont talk about it, it is at the back of our mind waiting for opportunity to arise n then we cough it out Like these commentators shameful
It was about a builder who died at the construction of the new stadium, not racism related at all. π
