Spain debutant David Garcia blames LENGTH OF THE GRASS for his side's defeat

Spain debutant David Garcia has blamed the length of the Hampden Park grass for Spain's shock defeat to Scotland.

Scotland made history on Tuesday evening by securing their first victory over their opponents for 39 years with a 2-0 win.

Scott McTominay scored either side of half-time to earn Steve Clarke's side a victory which sent them clear at the top of Group A in their Euro 2024 qualifying table.

They are three points ahead of Spain after winning their first two games of their qualifying campaign this international break.

Garcia, however, via Marca, told of the unusual reason why he believed his side lost the game on the night.

'We already saw that the grass was too long, and that cost us,' he began. 'We can’t make excuses for that, we have to look at ourselves and fix what we did wrong today.

At 29, Garcia was making his debut for Spain but was part of a defence that disappointed during the game.

The Osasuna admitted his pride in turning out for his country, but admitted his side are hurt by the shock defeat.

'I’m happy for the debut but the defeat has been hard,' he said. 'They have come at us twice all game, but we have to learn and get something positive out of this.

'I felt comfortable, it took me a bit to start, but I got into the game quickly.'

Spain and Manchester City defender Rodri, meanwhile, slammed Scotland's 'rubbish tactics in the game.

'It's the way they play, you have to respect, but for me it's a bit rubbish,' the visiting captain told Viaplay. 'Always wasting time, provoking you, always they fall.

'For me, this is not football. For the speed of the sport, you have to move on. The referee has to take on this, but he says nothing.'
