How do you recover from losing the Premier League title in the most agonising fashion?
That was the question facing Manchester United in the summer of 2012, as Sir Alex Ferguson plotted the toppling of title rivals and 'noisy neighbours' Manchester City. City, of course, had just snatched the trophy from United's clutches in 2011/12 with Sergio Aguero's late, late show against QPR and all the drama and pain that came with it.
The answer to the question was: sign the league's most prolific striker from one of your other rivals.
United confirmed the arrival of Arsenal captain, top scorer and talisman Robin van Persie on August 17th 2012, days before their season began at Everton.
The mooted deal had been reported a few days earlier by the MEN as a huge coup, with the tantalising prospect of Van Persie pairing up with Wayne Rooney "in a formidable strikeforce as United look to reclaim the domestic league title from big-spending neighbours City", as it was then written by this publication.
The first pictures then emerged of a beaming Van Persie — and a beaming Ferguson — together at United's Carrington training base. For a £24million fee, the deal had been remarkably straightforward to negotiate, despite interest from City and others.
"It's an honour to sign for Manchester United," said the Dutchman, then 29 at his unveiling.
"I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can't wait to get started."
"The boy wanted to come," said Ferguson. "He turned down various clubs. If he hadn't told Arsenal he wanted to go to Manchester United, the transfer wouldn't have happened.
"Robin is a world-class striker with a proven record in England and in European football.
"His talents need no introduction to our fans. He has scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his former club. His movement, finishing and all-round ability are outstanding.
"We never thought we could get Van Persie. If you go back six months ago, I couldn't see us getting him.
"I thought Arsenal are not going to let him go. When I read he had refused a new contract, that is when we acted. It has been a long haul."
The consensus was that Arsenal were only willing to part ways with their star man because he was heading into the final year of his contract, though there was anger in north London.
"I have regrets. We have lost a good player because of a simple reason," said Arsene Wenger.
"He only had one year left on on his contract and he wanted to go. We lost a good player, a world-class player - I don't deny that."
And though Ferguson insisted the Gunners were the ones who got a "great price", United had got themselves the previous season's players' and football writers' player of the year for a relatively cheap fee, even for 2012.
It would show, in style. Van Persie's form would continue, as he repeated his Arsenal heroics for Ferguson's United who got exactly what they wanted — they gloriously reclaimed the Premier League title from City in what proved to be the Scot's final season in management. Van Persie scored two hat-tricks and won the Golden Boot for the second successive year, the first player to do so with different clubs since Alan Shearer in 1996 and 1997.
Ironically Ferguson wanted to sign Shearer from Blackburn back then.
But in 2012/13 that understanding between Rooney and Van Persie would prove deadly, the pair linking up for an iconic goal against Aston Villa (which completed the second of those hat-tricks) as United lifted the title with four games to spare on a famous Old Trafford night, prompting Ferguson's retirement announcement soon after.
The moment is still viewed as a pinnacle for United, one that they've failed to reach in the years since. Van Persie would never rekindle that season's form under Ferguson's successor David Moyes, nor the man he replaced him, Van Persie's national team boss Louis van Gaal.
The signing of Van Persie allowed Ferguson to bow out as a champion and remains a watershed moment in United's history.

Lol... Ashley Cole said he missed Arsenal a lot, compared to Nasri who called us idiots, and I don't know if anyone regretted anything, that's their choice to make and the only one I know about was Alexander Hleb, joined Barcelona, earn more money and openly stated that he regretted the move and wish he could turn back time... Barcelona are not winning much but Neymar regretted leaving already, want to pay to go back, can he guarantee they would win if he returns? Noo, the same way he couldn't guarantee PSG victories, but the human relationships he built at Barcelona was the best and that's why he wants to return

in Barcelona there is only one person you must either get along with or leave ...Its easy as that no matter your talents especially when you are an attacker ..Pep left sanchez but their period together wasent the best either was with his successor...he found peace in Wenger and snubbed Pep for that reason to join a more confused united ...Sanchez was carrying arsenal a lot he even got the best of Ozil
And he already had a contract signed with Man City, in the summer for £60m, left with Arsenal's signature, Wenger won't sign until he got a replacement, which was Thomas Lemar, but Monaco quoted £90m, wanting to play on our desperation, so Wenger pulled out of the deal... then in January, United offered 3 times what he previously agreed with City, and Felidevich, his agent asked City to match the offer, they felt disrespected as they already had an agreement, so they pulled out and United was able to sign him... u still think its always about trophies? haha[Crylaugh], don't let modern football deceive u

Lol... Noo, u got it all wrong, Pep Guardiola chased and signed him up from Udinese himself, always talking about his workrate and how he can play through the forward line, Pep got along well with him, then he left in 2012, a year later, the club signed Neymar from Santos, Alexis was still playing as he could play across the forward line, then a year later, the club signed Luis Suarez... one of Alexis or Pedro had to leave, and Suarez wanted number 9, Alexis jersey, so it was clear who was leaving... and he had 2 options, Arsenal or Liverpool, he chose Arsenal because his girlfriend at the time favoured living in London over living in Merseyside... simple. And Pedro had to leave Barcelona a year later too, cuz nobody can displace the MSN

Like I told u earlier, Ashley Cole said he nearly crashed his car when he heard the salary Arsenal was offering compared to what Chelsea offered... if u still wanna tell yourself he joined because he wanted to win an European trophy, fine, you can keep deceiving yourself, but not me... He even played for Derby County last year in the division 2, I wonder if it's because he wanted to win "more trophies"... and Fabregas can't stop talking about his time at Arsenal, if he believes it was a waste of time and career, why would he do that?

To their favor and have them keep the majority of the income to themselves. Do u know the deal on Pepe's transfer? They didn't spend the whole 80 million at once, but to be paid over a 5 year period. Those greedy ppl don't wanna get Zaha as they have to pay it all at once, plus his salary request probably much higher.
We're still yet to see how good or bad that decision is... Zaha hasn't done anything this season either, if u put his stats in ours, we'd still be very poor, so let's give it time, shall we?

Wenger is a very responsible person with great personality that deeply cared about the club. The director and owner were using him as a scapegoat ... everything that is done was approved by them under the guise of financial stability after the new stadium was built - No more getting costly players (both in terms of salary and transfer fee)
Wenger is my role model, I admire his class, attitude, savviness, loyalty and his love for economics, but I've studied him a lot, read all the books he contributed to and I can tell u that he made a lot of mistakes as well... that's why I said he disappointed me and many others in the post, I'm not anti-Wenger, even if his obstinacy mean I wouldn't take him back as coach, president or chairman? of course

why was David Dein (if u know him) sacked? Why was Wenger micromanaging everything? And why the need for a sporting director now that he left?
David Dein was not a director, he was a co-owner who owned 42% of the club shares, and vice chairman, so he cannot be sacked... he left the club in 2007 sighting irreconcilable differences between him and other members of the board, apparently, an external owner wanted to buy Arsenal and fund the stadium building, and he supported it, but others wanted to hold on to their shares and take the debts route with Wenger as the sacrificial lamb (which is what they eventually did), that's why he left... So yes! I know David Dein.

OK simple question, why aren't Arsenal buying players now that venger is gone?
We spent more this summer (theoretically, after factoring the installmental payments and how inflation affects them) than in any single season of Wenger, including the years the payments of the stadium was completed, far back in 2012 and the club was making obscene profits... but instead of Wenger to be proactive, he was reactionary... could have signed Alexis, Özil and Cech in one window, he spread it over 3, have u seen the list of players he could have signed? most of the players are young players who became superstars, so money wasn't always the problem, but he dallies on and on because at the time there was a consensus the Queen of England is more likely to be sacked than he was!

So... Arsene Wenger let Van Persie get to the final year of his contract, sold him to a rival and regretted it, then he proceeded to make exactly the same mistake 6yrs later, with Alexis Sanchez... He refused to buy Gonzalo Higuain from Madrid for £35m cuz he feels he's too expensive, 3yrs later and the player is worth a whooping £90m in his next transfer to Juventus, uno, for a renowned economist, Wenger disappointed me a whole lot!

You see that's why he didn't a sporting director b/c there wouldn't be a conflict between the manager and the directors/owner. They will always play the financial stability card with him privately (rightfully to some extent) and he will then be seen as making the bad decisions not to sign players.
