Toni Kroos announces Real Madrid retirement: what Champions League record can he set in the final?

Kroos will play his last club game in the UCL final at Wembley, and his last game as a professional for Germany at Euro 2024.

After months of speculation, Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos as revealed that he will retire from soccer after the end of the 2024 European Championship in Germany. As a result, his last club appearance will come for the LaLiga giants in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium on 1 June.

The 34-year-old initially retired from international soccer after Germany’s elimination from Euro 2020 (played in 2021) but reversed his decision in February this year, four months before the next edition of the competition will be played in his homeland. His last ever game at professional level will therefore come for the German national team, who will face Scotland (14 June), Hungary (19 June) and Switzerland (23 June) in the group stage.

Kroos has won 32 major trophies in his career, which included five Champions League victories (one with Bayern Munich and four with Real Madrid).

If Carlo Ancelotti’s team defeat Dortmund in London at the start of next month, Kroos will become one of only three players in the Champions League era to win the competition on six occasions, along with current Madrid teammates Luka Modric and Nacho.

The legendary Paco Gento, who also starred for Real Madrid between 1953 and 1971, is the only played in the history of the tournament to have won it six times, back when it was known as the European Cup (1955-1992).
