Furious Tottenham Hotspur fans have blasted the Premier League club after an iconic flag was banned for being 'political'.

Athos, Alex and Chris Kyriacou have accused the football club of 'discrimination' after they were informed that their 'Spurs Cyprus' flag is 'political' and has been permanently banned from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Spurs fans have taken the flag across England and beyond for over 15 years and it has regularly been on display at the club's new ground as well as their old stadium, White Hart Lane.

But in a statement posted on Twitter on Friday, the supporters hit out at the club's 'nonsense' rationale after revealing that they have been told the flag is no longer allowed inside the stadium.

'Spurs have informed us that we are no longer allowed to bring the Spurs Cyprus Flag into the stadium anymore and that it is permanently banned from being brought inside,' the statement read.

'The reason they gave us, is that the flag is 'a political' flag and political flags are not permitted inside the stadium.

'This reason is complete and utter nonsense. The Cyprus flag is 100% NOT a political flag. We have had this flag up for 15+ years... and not had a single problem. Now all of a sudden it's 'a political' flag and is no longer allowed inside.

'We have been part of the furniture for years and many fans describe the flag as "iconic". Everyone loves it. No one has a problem with the flag.'

The statement went onto accuse the club of 'lying' and that they 'no longer care about us fans'.

'This is discrimination and we are truly hurt by the treatment of the club,' it continued. 'They are sucking the life out of us.'

The supporters have launched a petition to 'Get the Spurs Cyprus Flag back at Tottenham', which has thus far garnered 288 signatures.

Fellow Tottenham fans responded furiously to the news that the beloved flag would no longer feature at home games.

'Absolute disgrace,' one fan said. 'Just look through many of the iconic photos of the stadium(s) over the last 15 years and you'll find it in 90% of them.'

Another said: 'Used to love seeing this flag in the corner of the Paxton. It really is part of the furniture. Absolutely awful decision by the club.'

A third fan added: 'This is really ridiculous, in no way is the Cypriot flag political, it's a flag of a country. Not surprised tho [sic] with the club.'

The national flag of Cyprus features the shape of the island in its entirety, along with two olive branches to signify the peace between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
