Jose Mourinho's first game in charge of Roma ended in victory as goals from Lorenzo Pellegrini and Eldor Shomurodov saw them beat Trabzonspor in the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a goal disallowed on 25 minutes for handball, but the former Arsenal and Manchester United star set up Italy midfielder Pellegrini to volley home and net the first goal of the Mourinho tenure.

Former Napoli star Marek Hamsik tested new Roma signing Rui Patricio from distance but the Turkish side rang the changes in the second half, which saw Andreas Cornelius equalise with his first touch.

The former Cardiff City striker rose above Gianluca Mancini to nod in Bruno Peres' cross from the right, although there we claims the Brazilian was in an offside position when he received the ball before crossing.

Mourinho's men were taken aback by the equaliser and former Wolves goalkeeper Patricio had to be on hand to save twice from Anthony Nwakaeme.

But Mourinho's men would not be denied their victory despite their slight wobble.

Gianluca Mancini managed a header from a corner, only for it to come off the woodwork before Shomurodov reacted fastest to the rebound.

The second leg of the play-off will be at the Stadio Olimpico next Thursday.
