  /  Ba1ma

Euro 2020 kicks off in June next year and the 20 automatic qualifiers are known. Here is a look at how they got there and at the 16 teams that will fight for four remaining places via playoffs next March.

When is the Euro 2020 playoffs draw?

The draw will take place on UTC 2019/11/22 11:00

Who has qualified?

Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, Wales.

Which nations will take part in the Euro 2020 playoffs?

Path A will be completed with nations from League C.

League A: Iceland

League B: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland

League C: Scotland, Norway, Serbia, Bulgaria, Israel, Romania, Hungary

League D: Georgia, Macedonia, Kosovo, Belarus

How will UEFA decide the playoff paths?

There are two over-riding principles of the playoffs:

1) UEFA Nations League group winners cannot play a team from a higher path

This means that:

- Iceland must be in League A

- Bosnia and Herzegovina were guaranteed to be in the League B path with three other League B teams

- Scotland, Norway and Serbia were guaranteed to be in League C with one other League C team

- The League D path is complete with four UEFA Nations League winners

2) Where possible, a playoff path will be formed with four teams from the League

This means that:

- The League B path would always be formed of four League B teams and could not have League C teams drawn into it

Draw procedure

Path D

There will be a draw only to determine which semi-final winner plays the final at home. The semi-finals are as follows:

Semi-final 1 (1 vs 4): Georgia vs Belarus

Semi-final 2 (2 vs 3): North Macedonia vs Kosovo

Path C

The three teams that are League C group winners are confirmed and will play in the semi-finals in the following positions:

Semi-final 1 (1 vs 4): Scotland vs (team to be drawn)

Semi-final 2 (2 vs 3): Norway vs Serbia

A draw will be held to determine which team - Bulgaria, Israel, Hungary or Romania - complete Path C. A draw is also required to determine which semi-final winners plays the final at home.

Path B

There will be a draw only to determine which semi-final winner plays the final at home. The semi-finals are as follows:

Semi-final 1 (1 vs 4): Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Northern Ireland

Semi-final 2 (2 vs 3): Slovakia vs Republic of Ireland

Path A

Iceland - the one team from League A - are confirmed:

Semi-final 1 (1 vs 4): Iceland vs TBC

Semi-final 2 (2 vs 3): TBC vs TBC

The three remaining teams from League C - Bulgaria, Hungary, Israel, Romania - will be allocated to Path A to complete the semi-final pairings in the order of their ranking:

Best-ranked team to play at home in semi-final 2.

Next best-ranked team to play away in semi-final 2.

Next best-ranked team to play away in semi-final 1.

There will also be a draw to determine which Path A semi-final winner plays the final at home.

Additional draw

Denmark and Russia have both qualified for UEFA EURO 2020. As both are hosts (Copenhagen and Saint Petersburg) and paired together in Group B of the final tournament, a draw is required to determine which of the two will play three group stage games at home; the other host will play two group stage matches at home.

When do the play-offs take place?

The semi-finals will be played on Thursday 26 March, with the finals five days later on Tuesday 31 March. Kick-offs are generally 20:45 CET but exceptions may apply, in particular, related to time zones.
