I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez could be the best defensive partnership in Premier League history.
They will want to secure the silverware to back it up but they are racking up the clean sheets.
Since being restored as Jurgen Klopp’s preferred centre back pairing in mid-December, Liverpool’s back line has been breached once — a single goal conceded in 990 minutes of league football. It’s incredible.
Speaking about them in 2018, I said they almost play to music. That’s because they are so smooth and in tandem.
Then a fractured leg curtailed Gomez’s season and we were denied seeing them together.
Now, after Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren took turns partnering Van Dijk, Gomez is back.
Dutchman Van Dijk is 28 while England’s Gomez is 22 — and their talents are very similar.
Their pace is frightening and they ooze class in the way they travel round the pitch.
Van Dijk, the 2019 Ballon d’Or runner-up, is clearly ahead of his team-mate. He is stronger in the air and naturally more of a leader. But Gomez is not far behind. They work together brilliantly and we are finally getting the chance to witness that.

Baseless argument, you think VVD was awarded best player in EPL and UCL for no reason? Was Vidic even for once nominated for epl best player of the year? I watched Vidic in his playing days ,he was good but VVD is the modern day defender ,he defends with style and alacrity. He hasnt won the awards for no reason
