Van Gaal's 12 Man Utd signings and where they are now

Radamel Falcao - Van Gaal sacrificed Danny Welbeck to make room for El Tigre on deadline day in 2014 but his United career was a huge disappointment.

Daley Blind

The ultimate utility player, United fans were excited about Blind's arrival after his contribution to that Robin van Persie goal against Spain in the Brazil World Cup. The 28-year-old was arguably United's best defender on a technical level but his lack of physicality and pace perhaps counted against him. Returned to Ajax in 2018 and played a key role in their run to the last four of last season's Champions League.

Marcos Rojo

Had spells of good form earlier on in his United career but looks a lost cause now. United tried to sell him in the summer but a move to Everton fell through.

Angel Di Maria

Became United's club-record signing in the summer of 2014 and started the season in superb form. However, a hamstring injury suffered against Hull in the November curtailed his progress. Di Maria was never the same when he returned, with a break-in at his Cheshire home also cited as a reason for his poor form.

United made a £15million loss on the Argentine when they flogged him to PSG during the summer of 2015. Has 74 goals and 71 assists from his 192 appearances for the French champions.

Ander Herrera

Herrera was rewarded with United's Player of the Year award for his magnificent form during the 2016-17 season. Never quite reached those heights again and moved to PSG on a free when his contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of June.

Luke Shaw

Shaw struggled in Van Gaal's first season in charge but hit top form at the start of the 2015-16 season before a horrific leg injury stopped him in his tracks.

After three years on the periphery at Old Trafford, he finally established himself as the club's first-choice left-back last term but has missed the majority of this season with a hamstring problem.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

What a signing... he would have been had United snapped him up five years earlier! Basti's legs had gone when he arrived on a free transfer from Bayern and the German lasted less than two seasons before being shipped off to Chicago Fire in March 2017. Did prove his professionalism to get a few games after Mourinho had frozen him out upon his arrival in 2016, though.

Sergio Romero

Perhaps the best back-up goalkeeper in world football. Started the 2015-16 season in goal as David de Gea was meant to be going to Real Madrid but a broken fax machine ensured he was swiftly taken out of the team when the transfer window closed. Has proved himself to be an able deputy since.

Memphis Depay

Memphis arrived at Old Trafford from PSV with a huge reputation but never made his mark. Jose Mourinho sold him to Lyon in January 2017 but United inserted a buy-back clause in the deal.

The Dutchman has impressed for the Ligue 1 club, scoring 45 goals and notching 42 assists in 126 appearances.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Like Depay, Schneiderlin joined United in the summer of 2015 and left in the winter of 2017. He was a massive disappointment and United did well to get £22million for him when Everton came knocking.

Matteo Darmian

Began his United career superbly at the start of the 2015-16 season but quickly faded. Was a squad player for his final three years at the club and moved to Parma for a nominal fee on deadline day.

Anthony Martial

The only senior player left in United's squad who is a genuine No.9, Martial is arguably the Reds' most talented attacker but he is yet to rediscover the consistency he showed during his first season in England. Hasn't played since August due to injury.
