Watford have sealed a six-month deal for Mitchel Bergkamp, who is the son of Arsenal legend Dennis.

The Hornets have wrapped up the deal on a short-term basis, but there is an option to extend the contract if he enjoys a successful spell with the club's Under 23s squad.

The 22-year-old had spent a week training at Arsenal's London Colney base with Steve Bould and his Under 23s side in November last year, but he was let go following the trial.

Bergkamp has been available as a free agent since leaving Dutch second-tier side Almere City last summer following nine years with the club.

The youngster operates as an attacking midfielder, and after sealing his move to Watford he has admitted he can handle the pressure that comes with being the son of the Arsenal legend.

'When I was younger it was difficult [to be compared all the time] but I've adapted to it now,' he told Watford's official club website.

'It's just my name and I'm my own player and hopefully I can leave my own legacy. He's been amazing to me and for me. He's my No 1 fan and has always been there for me. It's a privilege to have him as my dad and to work with him on my game.'

Speaking about his move to Watford, he added: 'I'm very pleased and really excited for the future.

'It's great to get this opportunity and I can't wait to get on the pitch and start the hard work. I've been on trial, I've been working hard and I'm just really glad to get the chance to prove myself.

'I want to prove myself with the Under 23s and then one day hopefully get an opportunity for the first team. But it all starts with hard work.'

Mitchel has plenty of fond memories from English football following his father's illustrious days playing for Arsenal.

The former Dutch international is one of Arsenal's greatest ever players, having won three Premier League titles and as many FA Cups during his 11 years in north London.
