What happened to Man City's first 10 signings of the Sheikh Mansour era

The takeover of Manchester City by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited on September 1, 2008 changed the history of the club and English football.

Since that day, City have gone on to win four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups.

The Etihad Stadium is now an attractive destination for the world's leading players, with City having provided a home to numerous stars down the years.

Current employees Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, Ederson, Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva are among the world's best in their positions.

However, City had to revamp the club and its playing staff gradually after Sheikh Mansour's takeover. It was not a case of signing the world's best from day one.

So what became of the first 10 signings of the Abu Dhabi ownership?

Robinho

The first acquisition of the new era was a major statement of intent, as City splashed out £32.5m on Robinho. This was a hugely exciting addition, with the Brazilian among the world's leading young talents before his move to Real Madrid in 2005.

The forward didn't quite live up to expectations in the Spanish capital, but he made a strong start to life at City. That positive early form wouldn't last and Robinho was allowed to depart after less than 18 months on the books.

Although he won 100 caps for Brazil, there's still a sense that Robinho didn't fulfil his potential. Now 36, he's currently with Istanbul Basaksehir.

Wayne Bridge

Bridge arrived early in the January 2009 transfer window having been deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea.

He was a regular starter at left-back in his first year at City, before falling out of favour under Roberto Mancini in 2010/11.

After ending his career at Reading in 2014, Bridge was a contestant on reality TV show I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

He has made several media appearances in recent months but is not working as a full-time pundit.

Craig Bellamy

After an impressive stint at West Ham United, Bellamy joined City in the same January window in a deal worth £14m.

The fiery Welshman made 51 appearances for the club in all competitions, finding the net 15 times.

Bellamy hung up his boots after a spell with boyhood club Cardiff City and has since embarked on a coaching career. He currently works as Anderlecht's Under-21 manager after being brought to the club by Vincent Kompany.

Nigel de Jong

City paid £16m to bring De Jong to the club from Hamburg. He was a major success in Manchester, racking up 137 appearances before his departure in 2012.

The tough-tackling midfielder shone alongside Gareth Barry and won the Premier League title in his final full season at the club.

The Dutchman, now 35, currently plies his trade with Qatari outfit Al-Shahania.

Shay Given

City added Given to their ranks shortly before the mid-season transfer window closed in 2009, paying £5.9m to sign the goalkeeper from Newcastle United.

The Republic of Ireland internationals immediately became first choice between the sticks and retained that status the following year.

Sold to Aston Villa in 2011, he ended his career with Stoke City six years later. Given is now Derby County's goalkeeper coach.

Gunnar Nielsen

Given's time at City was shorter than many expected due to the emergence of Joe Hart, but it wasn't as uneventful as Nielsen's stint with the club.

Signed from Blackburn in 2009, the goalkeeper left three years later having played just a single match. The 33-year-old currently turns out for Icelandic outfit FH.

Gareth Barry

The Premier League's all-time record appearance maker played 132 of his 653 games in the division for City.

A reliable performer in midfield, the left-footed Barry only missed four matches as City won the title in 2011/12.

Still going strong at 39, Barry is currently on the books of Championship promotion-chasers West Bromwich Albion.

Roque Santa Cruz

The Paraguayan striker, acquired for £17.5m, scored just four goals in 24 outings for City.

The 38-year-old returned to his homeland with Olimpia in 2016 and remains at the club four years on.

Stuart Taylor

Taylor was a beneficiary of the Premier League's homegrown player rule, which prompted several teams throughout the division to sign an Englishman as their third-choice goalkeeper.

Taylor, who played just once in his three years at the Etihad, has been without a club since leaving Southampton in 2018.

Carlos Tevez

City's signing of Tevez caused consternation in the red half of Manchester, with Alex Ferguson bemoaning the arrival of City as “noisy neighbours”.

Tevez quickly proved his class on the pitch and helped City win the title in 2011/12, but only after a major bust-up with Roberto Mancini had seen him return to Argentina in the middle of the season.

The 36-year-old is now back at Boca Juniors, the club he began his career with in the early 2000s.
