In less than a week’s time, the 2024 summer transfer window will open in Spain. Undoubtedly, one of the teams to watch over the coming weeks will be Barcelona, who should be back to La Liga’s 1:1 rule, thus allowing deals to be done with less financial restrictions.
Betting on transfers is commonplace nowadays, and those looking to indulge will be looking for the best new betting sites. For Barcelona, they may need to take a big gamble on who the best players are to reinforce their squad.
It’s been widely reported that Barcelona will be looking at two positions in particular during the transfer window: defensive midfield and left wing. Currently, there has been many players linked with the latter position, with the club’s top targets appearing to be Nico Williams, Luis Diaz and Dani Olmo.
Of those three, there is a clear winner for who will be best for Barcelona: Williams. Not only is he significantly younger (21) than the other two, but he is already just as good – if not better. He would link extremely well Alejandro Balde at left-back, while also being very dangerous in attack. He’s obviously not the finished product yet, and is still quite raw, but there’s no doubt that he is the best option, especially as the prices of all three are similar.
Defensive midfield is arguably more important for Barcelona. It’s a position they struggled massively in last season, with Oriol Romeu struggled to live up to his predecessor: Sergio Busquets. Their shortcomings in 2023-24 makes it essential for the Catalans to sign a pivot, although the only concrete names to be linked in recent weeks is Joshua Kimmich.
There’s no doubt that Kimmich is a top player, but simply put, he is not what Barcelona require in that defensive midfield position. Similarly to Frenkie de Jong, he’s better with a deeper player alongside him, rather than being that player himself. Given this, and the fact that a deal would be expensive (in spite of Kimmich’s contract ending in 2025), another option should be considered: namely, Amadou Onana.
Onana would be a top class signing for Barcelona. He’s tall, physical and very good defensively. He’s also solid on the ball, and can drive forward when necessary, which shouldn’t be too much, Like Williams, he’s the younger alternative (22) that is simply better/more suited to the role that he’d be playing. It’s a no-brainer to go for him, provided that it is possible financially.
