When Che Guevara met Alfredo Di Stefano on July 16, 1952

On July 16, 1952, Real Madrid played against Alfredo Di Stefano's Millonarios at the Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campin in Colombia.

After Los Blancos had taken the lead through Roque Olsen, the home crowd exploded with noise when Di Stefano equalised.

Among those cheering from the stands was a 25-year-old Argentine called Ernesto Guevara, who would become better known as Che.

In the months before, Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado had got involved with a club called Independiente Sporting in the Colombian city of Leticia.

Guevara and Granado convinced the club to let them work with them and they were named coaches, working on defensive shape and marking.

They soon became player-coaches at the club, with Guevara going in goal due to his asthma problems and Granado impressing with his dribbling skills.

Later on, during their time in Bogota, Guevara and Granado were thought to have met Di Stefano, who was playing in the city for Millonarios, a handful of times through an Argentine student called Julian Corboda.

Guevara, who was a Rosario Central fan, had grown up idolising Di Stefano in Argentina, as well as winger Chueco Garcia.

In Bogota, they met after one of Di Stefano's games with Millonarios, chatted and were given tickets to another match by the forward.

Guevara and Granado also waited in a restaurant one day until Di Stefano turned up, such was their desire to see the Argentine legend.

Di Stefano went on to join Real Madrid while Guevara became a central figure in the Cuban Revolution.
