When elite players lose their temper: Headbutts, bites, punches and stomping on referees

Football is a sport full of emotion and on some occasions, players cannot control their temper on the pitch.

Lionel Messi was the latest example of an elite player who lost his temper during a game and was punished for violent conduct on the pitch in the Supercopa de Espana final between Barcelona and Athletic Club.

Following a rough Diego Simeone challenge, David Beckham kicked his opponent and was sent off in England's game against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup in France.

Zidane's headbutt on Materazzi

Zinedine Zidane was shown a red card after headbutting Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final between France and Italy, who were the team to win the trophy after a penalty shoot-out.
