Who is the most underrated player in the Premier League?

The Premier League's star names are heralded the world over but there are many players who do brilliant jobs without winning such adoration. We asked our team of reporters to name the pick of the bunch, the one player whose work deserves to be elevated among popular opinion.

Fernandinho

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Manchester City are nowhere near the force we recognise without the Brazilian master of the dark arts niggling, harassing and winning the ball back. Pep Guardiola knows this and has made bringing in a successor to his aging enforcer a priority. He is right to do so.

Jesse Lingard

I'm not sure underrated is the right word but I like Lingard every time I see him play. I'm not saying he should be flagged up for honours or anything like that, I'm simply pointing out that he is an excellent player, with a good attitude and terrific ability. He doesn't always get headlines but, more often than not, always has an impact.

Conor Coady

A solid defender at a top-eight club who is comfortable on the ball and is integral to the fifth-best defence in the Premier League. How he hasn't been elevated to Gareth Southgate's England squad is a mystery. Nuno Santo made him captain. He looks entirely at home in his first Premier League season, another example of a Championship player making the step up.

Troy Deeney

Another comeback year from the hard-knocks striker you can never write off and who has led Watford into the top half of the Premier League and an FA Cup semi-final.

Callum Wilson

When fit (a problem, admittedly) he's one of the most versatile strikers in the Premier League. Fast, can beat a man, great finish off either foot, shoots from inside and out of the area.

Matt Doherty

Wolves play a different system to any other Premier League club and Doherty is integral as a galloping wing-back. Plays every game and saved them in the FA Cup agaionst Shrewsbury. Started at Molineux in League One and has adapted every step of the journey.

Ruben Neves

Portuguese starlet helped Wolves storm the Championship and has now taken to the Premier League like a duck to water. Quietly goes about his business in central midfield.

Bernardo Silva

Granted, Silva simply cannot fly under the radar with those outside of City for much longer but he is still the unsung hero for now. Tireless runner as well as possessing real quality.

Paul Dummett

I'll go with a player who I see every week in my role as our North East man. The Newcastle defender said in an interview last season that fans always used to tell him he was 's****'. Not anymore. When Dummett plays Newcastle look better and benefit from his assured presence. He is arguably the best defender at the club and, when you consider the likes of Jamaal Lascelles are valued at £20million, it shows you why he is underrated.
