Which player lays claim to the iconic name and why are they most deserving of the title? Let's take a look.
The names of the most gifted footballers to ever play the game usually roll off the tongue.
Diego Maradona. Johan Cruyff. Zinedine Zidane. Lionel Messi. People are rarely left in doubt when they hear those words uttered.
However, mention the name 'Ronaldo' and more often than not you run the risk of being asked, "which Ronaldo? The real Ronaldo, or...?"
Who is 'the real Ronaldo?'
When people refer to the 'real Ronaldo' they generally mean Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima, the Brazilian footballer who was born in 1975.
The use of the prefix 'real' became widespread in the early-to-mid 2000s during rise to prominence of the Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo in order to distinguish between the two players.
Of course, in describing Ronaldo Nazario as the 'real' Ronaldo it was both a term of deference to the elder of the pair and inherently dismissive of the the younger.
Ronaldo Nazario, nicknamed O Fenomeno (meaning 'The Phenomenon' in Portuguese) had by that stage established himself as one of the best footballers in the world by scoring hundreds of goals, scooping two Ballons d'Or and three FIFA World Player of the Year awards.
He had starred at home for Cruzeiro before building his reputation as the most fearsome striker in world football at PSV, Barcelona, Inter and Real Madrid. The 'real Ronaldo' was therefore, for some, the genuine article and his glittering career warranted that he and he alone should lay claim to the name.
However, as the powers of Ronaldo Nazario declined later in his career and those of Cristiano Ronaldo grew stronger, the debate over who should be considered the 'real Ronaldo' began to rage.
In truth, when their careers are set against one another now, the Portuguese has far exceeded his Brazilian counterpart and for a younger generation of football fans he is 'the real Ronaldo'.
Indeed, Cristiano Ronaldo evolved into the most prolific goalscorer in football, smashing record after record on his way to success with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Portugal.
There is no comparison between the two when it comes to goals scored at both club and international level either, with the Portuguese scoring roughly double that of the Brazilian - helped, no doubt, by his superior longevity.
Similarities between Ronaldo Nazario & Cristiano Ronaldo
Aside from their names, there are a number of similarities between Ronaldo Nazario and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Long before the brand CR7, for example, Ronaldo Nazario and 'R9' were synonymous, with the Brazilian launching a personalised style of boots.
They are players who both starred as the face of Nike's football range over the years, appearing in advertisements and promotional imagery.
While Cristiano Ronaldo began his career as a winger, he eventually transformed into a complete forward, playing more in a central role, much as Ronaldo Nazario did.
Other footballers called Ronaldo
Ronaldo is a popular name in Brazil and Portugal and the debate over players called Ronaldo did not begin with Ronaldo Nazario and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Interestingly, Ronaldo Nazario was briefly known as 'Ronaldinho' in the early 1990s in order to distinguish him from Ronaldo Rodrigues de Jesus who was also playing for Brazil.
Ronaldo Rodrigues later became known as Ronaldao.
Ronaldo de Assis Moreira is another famous Ronaldo in football, though he is better known by the name Ronaldinho.

No doubt Ronaldo Nazario is the Real Ronaldo. One ,he is the Prototype. Two, he is an inventor. Most of the things you see Cristiano Ronaldo do was from Ronaldo Nazario, for example the showing of ones back to the fans for them to see your name and number when someone scores goal was once introduced by Ronaldo Nazario. Because when Real Madrid signed Ronaldo Nazario, it was Morientes that was wearing the number 9 jersey. And because Morientes refused to give out the number 9 to Ronaldo Nazario, then Madrid decided to give Ronaldo Nazario the number 11 jersey. And it lasted for long. It was when Madrid shipped out Morientes to Liverpool that Madrid now gave the number 9 jersey to Ronaldo Nazario. So when Ronaldo Nazario scored his first goal with the number 9 jersey, he ran to the fans in celebration turned his pointing to his name and the number9. So if you watch Cristiano Ronaldo goal celebrations from the beginning you will notice that he copied it from the Real Ronaldo (Ronaldo Nazario). Again, if you watch Ronaldo Nazario's Leg Over, you will notice that it's more natural when compared with Cristiano Ronaldo's own. Players with natural Leg Over include Ronaldo Nazario, Denilson,Robinho, etc. Moreover, people should also know that Ronaldo Nazario suffered an injury that prevented him from playing football for 3 years. Still, he came back and still conquered. He won world cup before his injury and still won world cup after his injury.

I think it's unfair to compare when both played in a different time different era. Ronaldo Nazario played in a time of bone crunching tackles (thus his injuries) from top defenders when little repercussion existed. If you don't believe me YouTube Holland vs Brazil in '98 as an example. Most of the fouls (not even yellows) you'll see in that game in TODAY's game would have been straight reds, or ask the great Maldini who had to wrap arms around him to slow him down. He was lighting fast and too much to handle for top defenders. I always said had CR7 or Messi played back then before rules tighten up their talents would have been surpressed by rough defending and/or early injury. For R9 will always be THE Ronaldo. Not because of stats but because of character. He was injured, told he would never play again, and rose above all odds and won the World Cup....TWICE. Also neither CR7 or Messi brought their nations to a World Cup final at age 22. Respect to CR7 (and Messi) as they've set extraordinary records in the modern game but that's just it... in the mordern game. anyways long story short ...both deserve their credit but the name should be R9's honor.

You can't compare messi and cr7, messi has played all his life in Barcelona and he has won the world best 5times in Spain, but the God of football who left England to Spain won't it 4times after he won it in England, to tell you that Spanish football is very easy, messi should learn from cr7, if messi leave's Barcelona then you can compare him with the God of football which is cr7, to win the world best player in England do you think it's a joke, now the God of football is in Italy again, and messi is still in Barcelona, the difference is very clear you can not compare a God to a king, God created king's to rule over the kingdoms he has created, messi is the king of football but cr7 is the God of football even messi agrees to it you can see the look on his face right now case closed.

I think in this form of debate who ever describe someone as (real) doesn't know what he is saying. And who is fick? They are all professionals aren't they? But for me, i think Christiano Ronaldo is far better than Ronaldo Nazario is just that the slightly different between them is that Nazario lifting the world cup with great group of players but when it comes to their stats i don't think this Nazario guy will come even near to this Christiano guy in terms goals, assist and what ever that make fooball stand both club and country. So please you the Messi fans stop this comparisons between this two Ronaldo's ok because Christiano is way way ahead of Nazario as far as football is concern.

This is not a tough question, CR7 fans always says that CR7 is better than Messi because he won trophies for his country while Messi didn't. If we look from this pt. of view Nazario is far better than CR7 But i am a real football fan who witnessed the golden era of Messi and Ronaldo. And i am really proud of this. If i have to Choose than this is CR7 who is better,obviously...

R9 was lucky that he played for Brazil during their best. When Brazil had the best squad likes of Ronaldinho, Ricardo, Carlos, Kaka, Robinho, Rivaldo, Lucio, Cafu, Romario etc.. They could won without or with R9. It was like France, Spain or German teams won the WC. If R9 played for Portugal no one would recognised his name cuz he didn’t win UCL or didn’t do anything specials for Club. He was only recognised by the WC due to Brazil unstoppable squad. Give you more lessons ha
uhhh ! this guy keeps talking shit again and again🙏🙏 watch some videos of R9 and watch interviews of great players( defenders especially) talking about him

Before Ronaldo Nazario got injured , he was the greatest footballer the world has ever seen, he had the pace of mbappe though a bit quicker an he had the skill of Ronaldinho, the guy was out this world. He was second to none. But he got injured three worst injuries yet that didn't stop him from winning the world cup an becoming the second highest goal scorer in the world cup. second to klose who had more games than Nazario. Nazario is a combination of Ronaldinho an Mbappe those who have watched him before he got injured. meaning u can't compare him with any player. an those guys football was a passion not these who r ever betting. in this generation we don't have a lot of good players that's why messi is magical an Ronaldo is a goal otherwise in the early 1980s an 1990s we had real competition no betting involved

Silly app, Cristiano was named Ronald. Secondly Ronaldo has Two world cups, not that nonsense you call ucl. These fools called journalist don't understand nothing. Goal scoring and football genius are two different things. Ronald is a goal getter period, Real Ronaldo was a phenomenon. To all that contributed to this useless debate please switch to another sport. You have no understanding like the stupid coaches of today about the sport. Football rules have changed from the days real men played. Red and yellow cards introduced 1966, because of the horrific fouls committed on Pele. Substitutions introduced, no back passes, no tackling from behind etc. Today 'S football barbie football. From the year 2015 soft, controversial, corrupt and rubbish football.
