Why Daniel James was substituted in Wales win vs Azerbaijan

Manchester United star Daniel James again played a starring role for Wales as they took a big step towards Euro 2020 qualification.

Wales, needing to beat Azerbaijan in Baku, completed a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson.

James' curling shot that cannoned off the woodwork in the first half led to Wilson's strike, with Ryan Giggs' side now needing to beat Hungary in their final qualifier to join the likes of England in the Euro 2020 finals. It was an assist for the United star, who has recently celebrated his 22nd birthday, though he probably deserved a goal as he contributed to a huge win for his country.

Giggs substituted some of his main stars, such as Gareth Bale and then James during the match because both players were on yellow cards and risked being suspended if they were booked against Azerbaijan. James has picked up a yellow card earlier in the campaign against Croatia, so was replaced by former Manchester City youngster Rabbi Matondo in the final stages.

But he was injury-free and almost certain to start for Wales against Hungary at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.

United youngster Dylan Levitt was with Giggs' Wales senior squad for the game but remained an unused substitute.
