Why Sancho's demands put Real Madrid off sealing summer transfer

Real Madrid reportedly pulled out of a move for Jadon Sancho last summer over his first team demands.

Spanish outlet AS say that Los Blancos were in advanced talks to sign the English teenager from Man City before he put pen to paper with Borussia Dortmund .

But the England international reportedly insisted on training with the Real Madrid first team from the outset and wanted assurances over his prospects of making the step up if he started with their 'B' team, Castilla.

Real Madrid were hesitant to commit to these demands after their experience with Martin Odegaard, who has struggled to make an impact since his high-profile signing as a 16-year-old.

Things have worked out well for Sancho since his proposed move to the Bernabeu fell through, with his dazzling Bundesliga form for Dortmund earning him his England debut in October.

However, Real Madrid are determined not to miss out in their pursuit of another Man City young gun as they target Brahim Diaz when his contract expires in the summer.

They again face competition from another top European club, this time in the former of Paris Saint-Germain, whilst Man City boss Pep Guardiola says they are keen to keep hold of the Spaniard.

Guardiola said yesterday: "The case of Brahim is very simple: we want him to stay, we want to extend his contract for four or five years and we'll do absolutely everything to keep him here but, as I said before, it's in his hands."

After seeing Sancho flourish away from the Bernabeu, it is expected Real Madrid will step up their pursuit for Diaz to avoid missing out.
