Wolves: Ruben Neves 'is already negotiating summer move to Man United'

Ruben Neves is in talks over a summer move to Manchester United after Barcelona pulled out of the race to sign him, according to reports in Spain.

The Wolves captain is one of the most coveted players outside the 'Big Six' and has won numerous plaudits for his stellar midfield performances.

Central midfielder Neves' contract at Molineux expires in summer 2024, meaning the Midlands club could look to sell him at the end of the season rather than lose him for nothing the following year, and is unlikely to sign a new deal.

Spanish giants Barcelona were heavily linked with a transfer, but according to Fichajes, have now 'closed the door' on the move.

That has given United the opportunity to swoop in, with the Spanish outlet claiming the Red Devils are 'already negotiating' to sign the 26-year-old.

Fichajes also state Barcelona's swoop for Neves was 'very close' to being completed, with financial terms agreed with agent Jorge Mendes, but did not go through because manager Xavi Hernandez had doubts about his 'profile'.

Xavi seemingly felt Neves was more of a No 8 than a defensive midfielder who can play in front of the defence.

The Catalan outfit want to strengthen in that position in particular given the situation of Blaugrana skipper Sergio Busquets, who could leave this summer at the end of his contract amid links to several MLS clubs.

Barca prioritising signings in other positions and uncertainty among the coaching staff about Neves are also given as reasons for the deal's collapse.

Premier League sides Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea are also reportedly keen on a move for 38-cap international Neves - but United are believed to be in pole position in the race.
