Granit Xhaka is facing a fight to save his Arsenal career as the club fired a stark warning over growing indiscipline on Monday.
Gunners boss Arteta, who has been unequivocally backed by club chiefs, branded Xhaka's conduct 'unacceptable' after the midfielder was sent off for grabbing Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood by the throat during the demoralising 1-0 loss on Sunday night.
Sportsmail understands that despite having played regularly for Arsenal since Arteta's arrival last year - the club are open to offers for the Switzerland international.
His lack of discipline at the Emirates on Sunday night and Arteta's subsequent public criticism will only serve to reinforce internal beliefs that Xhaka is dispensable.
Indeed, in a rare interview on Monday technical director Edu issued a stern warning to players regarding discipline.
In addition to Xhaka's red mist, record signing Nicolas Pepe was sent off during a recent clash agaisnt Leeds for lashing out at Ezgjan Alioski.
And Edu said: 'This (discipline) is something important to mention because that means you have to be here and be prepared to face that situation because sometimes you get emotional, then you react, the way you don't need to react and sometimes you make a mistake like they have done.
'Mikel is in charge, he is talking to the players, telling them we need all of the players so we need 11 players to play against 11 because it's so difficult to play 11 without 11 against any club in England.
'The players have to understand but Mikel is in charge of it, they talk to the players a lot and they must understand the importance of not behaving like this.' Edu also provided under-fire Arteta his backing following a dismal start to the season that sees them sit in 15th place.
'If we're not talking about patience with Mikel it would be very unfair to him. Because what a year we have faced.
'Mikel is doing a great job, he is really doing well here. Players believe, the staff are enjoying it, everybody believes and everybody tries to be positive here on a daily basis. So nothing has really changed.
'I think the club needs stability right now, we have faced so many changes.
'It is not about Edu, Mikel, it is about stability. Now is the time to try and be a stable club in the old sense - externally and internally, we need that.
'Since we arrived here we have been changing, changing, changing, now is time to be stable and together at the same time.' Meanwhile, Edu has swung the door open for Arsene Wenger to make his first return to the Emirates since leaving in 2018.
'It is very simple, you need strong people and a good character, I have nothing bad to say about Arsene so if he is around that would be good,' added Edu.
'Normally we need someone like him to talk. Sometimes I call people, Mikel calls good people for advice and it is always good to have big guys around you.'

I think we should have seen an apology from Xhaka by now, I'm yet to see any so pathetic that we keep having this issues which are also tactics in a game and we keep falling victims... Xhaka is a complete disappointment wit the way he conducted himself knowing fully well he committed the fowl....

Arsenal now is like spurs in the 90s, chopping and changing of managers and the team , board room fights etc and that's the reason spurs didn't win anything during that time. So, don't laugh at us for being trophyless... What goes around comes around!
We're still winning trophies in this club storm

It was a bad move for Zhaka , but don’t forget with Partey Injured we don’t have any body better than him defending the middle field , so I think he should apologize and avoid such indiscipline because Zhaka is great player we won’t understand until we loose him to some weak player

They way everything has transpired over the last few years has definitely left a deep scar on the club...and that starts at the top....Kroenkes and their handling of AW final year, the way Gazidis bolted, the firing of A LOT of staff, the UE drama, the Ozil fiasco, I could go on n on n on but what's the point. The House needs disinfectant of astronomical amounts....The culture WE used to have no longer exists. I believe that starts at the top...the Kroenkes own our team, fair enough, we demand the return of OUR CULTURE. I am not a fan of this modern day approach to what being a big club is about....Bring back RESPECT. Immediately needed in order for us to correct what's transpired to date. Forever loyal, Forever faithful... COYG
