Zinedine Zidane will return to club football if Didier Deschamps stays on as head coach of the French national team, according to reports.
Deschamps has been considering his future as France manager since his side's heartbreaking World Cup final defeat against Argentina on penalties, and it is understood that the 54-year-old boss will hold talks with the French FA in January.
Should Deschamps, who led France to World Cup glory as a player in 1998 and as a coach in 2018, decide to walk away from the team, fellow France legend Zidane is the runaway favourite to replace him.
Reports emerged after the final that Benjamin Pavard had caused tension in the dressing room following a row with Deschamps, and Karim Benzema - who announced his international retirement on Monday - reportedly fell out with the manager and did not return to Qatar after recovering from injury as a result.
According to L'Equipe, free agent Zidane is not prepared to wait around for the France job and would strongly consider returning to club football.
It is believed he would still be very interested in managing his country in the future.
Zidane won three successive Champions League trophies as Real Madrid manager between 2015-16 and 2017-18 and also marshalled his side to LaLiga glory in both 2016-17 and 2019-20.
Paris Saint-Germain chased his signature last summer before hiring Christophe Galtier, but Zidane had little interest in joining the organisation at the time.
The French newspaper claims the ex-World Cup winner would prefer to move to a league he knows well - such as Serie A or LaLiga rather than the Premier League.
Zidane is believed to be interested in the Juventus position, although it is not available as of now.
Meanwhile, Toni Kroos has backed Zidane - his former Real Madrid boss - to take over as head coach of the French national team.
'I definitely think Zizou would not only be a good successor but the best possible successor,' Kroos insisted on Monday, as quoted by Diario AS.
'The big question is: what does Didier Deschamps want? I'd say there's a 70/30 chance for Zizou to become France's new coach.
'I think he really wants to get back onto the training field.'

I vote for Zidane. he really is the best and Deschamps is not getting the best out of such great players. He has a fifty fifty record with one of the best teams in the world.

Base on the record Zidane had with Real Madrid, then he's a good candidate ,if not then, he's the best 👍!!! He loves flowing football, very offensive.

As much as I like Zidane. There’s no need to replace Deschampes. If it’s not broken, why replace ?
