Ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s home match against Borussia Dortmund, Xabi Alonso confirmed in a press conference that he will leave the club at the end of the season.
On His Future
“The club and I have reached an agreement—these will be my last two games with the team. We believe it’s the right time to part ways, and today is the right time to make this decision public. We’ve maintained good communication with the club throughout.”
“The first season was the most complex, the second was historic, and this one brought the most challenges. We were the defending champions and played in the Champions League. Though it was tough, I learned a lot and experienced tremendous growth.”
Future Plans
“Now is not the time to talk about what’s next, because we want to have a beautiful farewell on Sunday. It’s a moment full of emotions. We’ve walked the right path together over these years, and there are still two very exciting matches left.”
“Football and life are both about finding the right moment. That’s how I see it. We hope this farewell reflects that, especially considering the long, beautiful, and important time we’ve spent here. I want to enjoy every final moment.”
Have You Informed the Players?
“I’ve spoken with the players and staff, and with everyone who has been with us during these unforgettable three years. Now it’s time to share this moment with the fans in the stadium that made me who I am today. I’m very thankful, and we can all be proud of what we’ve achieved.”
Next Club?
“I’m not going to talk about that now. We still have a few games to play, the season isn’t over yet. That conversation will come after. In football, timing is everything—choosing the right moment to change is the hardest part. Last year I felt I should continue, this year I don’t.”
Expectations for Sunday’s Match
“Now it’s time to share the moment with the fans, in this stadium that’s brought me so many emotions and helped shape who I am. Let’s enjoy it together as always.”
On Reports that Wirtz Wants to Join Bayern
“He hasn’t told me anything. That’s not information I have.”
Do You Have a U.S. Visa (to attend the Club World Cup)?
“I don’t know (laughs).”
On His Bond with the Club and Fans
“We’ve always had a strong connection. They’ve supported us and helped us greatly. I can only express my gratitude and respect. The DFB-Pokal final will be the most emotional moment.”
“Last season’s final week was incredibly intense. At one point, I knew we were going to win the Bundesliga. After the bitter defeat in Dublin (Europa League final against Atalanta), I wanted to finish this season in the best possible way.”
“In the end, we succeeded, finishing a historic season with the domestic double. It’s the perfect way to cap off a dream year, and I believe it will be remembered for a long time.”
On Leverkusen’s Future
“I have no doubts about the club’s direction. Leverkusen is in an extraordinary moment. I’m happy to have been a part of it. It’s been an important cycle with the players. At some point, it has to end, and it’s best to end it on a high rather than in bad times—that makes it easier for everyone.”
Will You Take Any Players With You?
“I can’t promise I won’t take a Leverkusen player with me in the next phase of my coaching career (laughs).”
