Several teams have attempted to end Bayern Munich's dominance in the Bundesliga, but none of the suitors have managed to effectively compete for the title since the 2012/13 season.
Back in May, the Bavarians won their ninth Bundesliga title in a row and each year it seems as though the Munich-based team are unstoppable in domestic football, with teams such as Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen coming short in the last few years.
There have been several suggestions for potential changes that would make Bundesliga more interesting and competitive, with former Bayer Leverkusen CEO and Bundesliga president Wolfgang Holzhauser going as far as proposing a change in format to make the German top flight more attractive to fans.
Holzhauser's radical idea
The 71-year-old suggested that the regular season of the Bundesliga should stay as it is and when the campaign is over, the top-four teams should participate in playoffs to determine the champions.
"The top four teams would play a semi-final against each other after the Bundesliga regular season [ends]," Holzhauser told Spox.
"The leaders [will play] against the fourth-placed [team] and the second-placed against the third-placed. The winners will play a final and those who lose [will play] a match for the third and fourth spots.
"This format would be exciting for the fans. It can't be in the minds of the fans that everything is determined in October. You can't solve this problem financially, but you can do so in a sporting way. Still, this would also have a financial benefits."
How about the Bundesliga powerhouses?
Holzhauser admitted that the elite Bundesliga clubs such as Bayern Munich may not agree with his idea, but he believes that a change in format will be beneficial for all the clubs both financially and in sporting terms.
"[Bundesliga powerhouses] would not agree, but you can always argue," declared Holzhauser.
"It is not about taking anything away from Bayern for example. You have to generate new income and redistribute it. A decreasing payment method would also be nice, so that the bottom-placed team gets more and the fifth-placed, less.
"Football and its supporters are generally conservative and less open to new things. Of course, there will be a year when Bayern are weak or have bad luck with injuries. Hopefully, another team could benefit from it, like Dortmund this year."
