Carragher has Liverpool transfer theory with Slot blocked from copying Klopp

Liverpool have come flying out of the blocks in this summer's transfer window, but Jamie Carragher is not convinced Arne Slot will have the same power as Jurgen Klopp

Despite Liverpool's busy start to the transfer window, Jamie Carragher does not believe Arne Slot will have the same influence on outgoings and incomings as Jurgen Klopp. After winning the Premier League, the Reds are heavily backing Slot in the transfer window.

They have already snapped up Jeremie Frimpong and are still chasing down lucrative deals for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez from Bayer Leverkusen and Bournemouth. Despite being constrained to the sole acquisition of Federico Chiesa in his first transfer windows as Liverpool boss, the Dutchman appears to be fully supported in the current market.

However, with the likes of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz being linked to Bayern Munich and Barcelona, the possibility of Liverpool selling players also cannot be overlooked either. If Slot decided he wanted to keep players like the aforementioned duo, then Carragher does not believe the ex-Feyenoord manager would be able to stop them, if the club decided they had to go to raise money.

On 'The Overlap', Carragher painted a picture of the behind-the-scenes dynamics, saying: "We know a little bit of what's gone on behind the scenes. They've brought all the old transfer people back if you like. They had a falling out with Klopp, but they're back now running the club.

"The great thing they built with Klopp, this great team and then they moved away as Klopp got more power. I think players who have been legends for the club and won the biggest trophies, were given contracts and were allowed to stay at Liverpool longer, too long basically.

"That's why Liverpool fell off for a little bit and then came back. I think the way they want to run Liverpool is that they are not going to sell their absolute best players.

"But a Diaz or a Gakpo, who are good players, they wouldn't want to sell them, but if someone made them an offer, that they think 'That's more than what we think (they are worth)' I think that's the way it will be run now, it will be like 'Oh no, he's gone and we back ourselves to go again'.

"That's what I mean in terms of those getting linked. I'm like 'No you wouldn't want to sell those' but they are probably thinking, 'If you offer us enough money we will do it'. I think the club will be like that now."

Carragher's comments come as Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a record-breaking transfer deal for Wirtz, with a £109million offer already rejected by Leverkusen. The Bundesliga club, who are now managed by ex-Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, are understood to be demanding £125m to part with the German international.

If Liverpool meet that fee, it would not only shatter the club's transfer record, it would also break the Premier League record, which is currently held by Chelsea, when they forked out £115m to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion.

But while Liverpool are willing to back their manager, the Dutchman's influence will only go so far, in Carragher's eyes. The ex-Liverpool defender added: "Arne Slot is called the head coach.

"He's the first head coach in Liverpool history. Even though he has won the league in his first season, I don't think they're going to allow what happened with Jurgen Klopp.

"He was making these bigger decisions and he was a god and everyone loves him. I think there could be a few surprises who may go if Liverpool get offered the right money."
