After Mohamed Salah announced he was leaving Liverpool, Jamie Carragher has caught some flak for a collaboration he did with the club on social media

Jamie Carragher has responded to Liverpool supporters who accused him of showing disrespect toward Mohamed Salah, following his placement of the Egyptian at No. 6 in his ranking of the club's all-time greats. On Tuesday, Salah announced he would be departing the club when the season concludes.

He confirmed his decision by sharing an emotional video showcasing numerous highlights from his time at the club. Two days later, club media published an interview they had conducted with Carragher, in which he ranked who, in his opinion, are the finest ever players to play for the team.

On the former Liverpool defender's ranking, Salah appeared as sixth, behind Ian Rush, John Barnes, Graeme Souness, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard.

Numerous social media users criticised Carragher for showing disrespect to Salah regarding the timing of its publication, barely 48 hours following the Egyptian's confirmed exit, reports the Liverpool Echo.

In his defence, Carragher maintained there was no disrespect meant while also clarifying it was the club's internal media department who released the video. He tweeted: "It's not poor timing from anyone, I did this interview before Salah announced his decision.

"Then [I] went on the overlap a day after the Salah announcement and brought up I'd put him 6th on the LFC list. The club decided to put it out before I gave away my full list!"

After another social media user implied Carragher was attempting to have a dig at Salah, considering the war of words they've engaged in throughout this campaign, the former centre-back responded forcefully once more.

He wrote: "I'm not one of his biggest critics, when have I ever criticised Salah the player. I said he's the 2nd best foreign player ever in the PL!

"You and plenty of others don't know enough about the club's history and are being very disrespectful to other players on that list!"

On The Overlap, discussing Salah's departure, Carragher suggested Liverpool's all-time leading Premier League scorer might consider returning to Italy, where he featured for Fiorentina and AS Roma prior to his Anfield switch.

Carragher said: "I think Mo Salah, the way he's driven like a Ronaldo, I don't see the Saudi thing just yet.

"I can see him in Italy with one of the giants. I just think your career's over when you go there [Saudi Arabia]. I think he'll still be looking at his Champions League record or how many goals he can get.

"I still think he thinks, 'I'm still one of the best players, and me leaving now is not the end of my top-level career, I've still got something to give'."
