Beier scored in stoppage time, but Mala missed a one-on-one opportunity
Match Report
Borussia Dortmund defeated 1. FC Köln in the last minute. Until then, BVB had been unable to stop the strong FC goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe.
For BVB, the task against Köln proved very complicated from the start, as FC Köln was extremely dangerous on the counterattack. Marius Bülter played the ball to Said El Mala, who was through on his own – and hesitated too long in front of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. His shot rolled just wide of the goal, with Rami Bensebaini having decisively disrupted the Cologne star.
But the scene reflected the course of the first half very well. Dortmund played hesitantly and slowly – and repeatedly lost the ball in dangerous areas. Nico Schlotterbeck, Waldemar Anton, and Bensebaini struggled to stop the speedy El Mala, but defended well together.
BVB, on the other hand, initially only stood out through individual actions. Around the 34th minute, Karim Adeyemi quickly turned around his opponent Cenk Özkacar, but was then denied by a brilliantly reacting Marvin Schwäbe.
Shortly afterward, a shot from Felix Nmecha (37th minute) flew just wide of the Cologne goal. Schwäbe would have had no chance here.
At the start of the second period, Cologne's goalkeeper made a brilliant save, denying a shot from Serhou Guirassy (53rd minute) from a few meters away. Dortmund then pinned FC in their own half, and Schwäbe parried a long-range shot from Felix Nmecha (62nd minute).
During the scoring phase, Kovac tried to force the win by substituting Marcel Sabitzer, Maximilian Beier, and Fabio Silva. Cologne continued to hold firm – but Beier scored from BVB's 15th corner.
The game was overshadowed by the potentially serious knee injury to Cologne's Timo Hübers. He was left in pain in the 82nd minute after a challenge with Serhou Guirassy – apparently, he had twisted his knee.
Some Cologne players immediately threw up their hands. Hübers was treated on the field for several minutes and eventually taken off on a stretcher. The center-back repeatedly touched his head, his face contorted in pain. Both sets of fans applauded.
Since Cologne had exhausted their substitutions, FC had to play the final minutes with a man down.
