Dortmund set sights on Bundesliga title push

Nico Schlotterbeck insisted Borussia Dortmund "want to become champions" after they closed the gap to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to six points.

Dortmund had to come from behind to earn a 3-2 win over Heidenheim on Sunday, with Serhou Guirassy scoring a brace to seal the victory.

The Black and Yellow had taken the lead through Waldemar Anton, though found themselves on the back foot three minutes into the second half after Julian Niehues scored on either side of half-time.

Dortmund ensured they maintained their unbeaten record at home in the top-flight this term (W8 D2) and are the only team yet to lose on home soil in the Bundesliga this term.

And it was a vital three points for them in their pursuit of Bayern, who dropped points for the second week running in the league, with Schlotterbeck keen to keep the pressure on their rivals.

"As BVB, you also have to have the ambition to tell the fans that we want to become champions," Schlotterbeck told DAZN.

"Now we have six points, three fewer than after the winter break. That's why I, and the lads too, can say we want to attack now.

"We won with a bit of luck, but I couldn't care less. That's football. Maybe they'll [Bayern] start to think about it."

Despite Bayern's recent wobble, they are still overwhelming favourites to clinch the Bundesliga title according to the Opta supercomputer, winning 96.8% of the simulations to Dortmund's 2.9%.

Niko Kovac's side finished the game against Heidenheim with 3.3 expected goals (xG) from their 19 shots, with Guirassy, who missed a penalty that would have secured his hat-trick, contributing 2.2 to that total.

In fact, he accumulated almost more xG on his own than Heidenheim did as a team (2.3 xG), though his total was inflated by the two penalties.

Dortmund are on a four-game winning streak in the Bundesliga, while they also extended their scoring streak to 28 games in the top-flight.

"We controlled the first half, and then it's 1-1 because Filippo (Mane) gets injured," Schlotterbeck added.

"In the second half, there were some crazy moments for both sides. We had a lot of chances, but we also allowed them a lot and were a bit fortunate to win – but we got the win."
