Despite being a key figure at West Ham United, Edson Álvarez may be nearing the end of his Premier League stint. A top German club is reportedly interested in acquiring the Mexican international, potentially offering him a new chapter in his European career.
Álvarez set for Ten Hag reunion?
Bayer Leverkusen has emerged as a likely destination for Álvarez, and one major factor could smooth the transition: Erik ten Hag. The current manager, who previously coached Álvarez during their time together at Ajax, is familiar with the midfielder’s skill set and could play a pivotal role in bringing him to the Bundesliga.
Álvarez would be entering his third European league, having already proven himself in the Netherlands with Ajax and in England with West Ham, where he quickly became a vital part of the Hammers’ midfield setup.
Álvarez’s breakout in Europe came during his time in the Eredivisie, where he made 98 league appearances for Ajax, scoring ten goals and providing six assists. He won two Dutch league titles and a domestic cup - his most significant achievements on the continent to date.
Born in Tlalnepantla, Álvarez began his professional career with Club América, where he won both the Liga MX and Copa MX titles. His move to Europe came via a €15 million transfer to Ajax, followed by a €38 million switch to West Ham.
