Ahead of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against Borussia Mönchengladbach this Sunday, head coach Vincent Kompany spoke at a press conference about the team’s preparations and expectations for the game.
On Manuel Neuer’s status:
“If all goes well, Neuer will return tomorrow.”
On preparations post-title win:
“This week has been like any other—we’re fully prepared. It’s an important match because it’s Thomas Müller’s final home game at the Allianz Arena.
It’s a day to celebrate, and we want a perfect Saturday. That won’t be easy—we’re facing a strong opponent.”
On Müller’s final home match:
“It’s definitely going to be emotional. I’m not sure whether Müller or those around him will be more emotional. These are special moments. I’ve experienced them myself, and I know Müller—he’s still a fighter, always wanting to prove what we can do. His bond with the fans is very special.”
On who might lift the trophy—Neuer, Müller, or Kane:
“I don’t know who will lift it. What matters most to me is that the trophy stays at Bayern. I’ve only planned for the match—I don’t know what will happen afterward.”
On talks with Sané about staying:
“For me, the most important thing is always the sporting aspect. We talked about my plans for next season. I don’t get involved in other matters. I understand players have concerns—this is a big moment in his life. What matters to me is that the players perform well, and Sané has done that.”
On winning the Bundesliga and what it means to Belgian coaches:
“I’m very happy and grateful. I hope my story can inspire others. After experiencing both promotion and relegation with Burnley, I earned Bayern’s trust and the chance to win the Bundesliga—that’s something truly special. I see it as a beginning, and I believe a new generation of Belgian coaches will emerge soon.”
On academy players getting chances:
“We always discuss what’s best for their development. Now is a good time for them to get opportunities, but the club also wants them to help the youth teams win championships.
We’ll support them, even if that means some will have to wait for first-team chances. Winning a youth championship is also important.”
On Hamburger SV potentially getting promoted:
“I’ve been following HSV and cheering for them. I love Munich, but Hamburg is also a beautiful city. I’d love to have two trips to Hamburg next season.”
On Müller playing tomorrow:
“I’m not stupid, but let’s wait and see tomorrow—I don’t want to spoil the party.”
On how the title affects his coaching status:
“When I was 17 or 18, I was seen as one of Europe’s top talents, but I had many injuries and experienced both praise and criticism from the media.
My story is about pushing forward.
As a player, I learned to focus on myself. As a coach, it’s different—you have to make the whole team function. I don’t care how people see me. What matters is that the team runs well. I don’t want anyone to think I’m satisfied—I want to keep pushing forward.”
